Truly bizarre. They think they are going to get Chip Kelly, but their realistic best-case scenario is something like Greg Schiano or Matt Ruhle, or someone roughly equivalent. Is that really worthy of a mid-year firing? If I were them I'd try to hire Bo Pelini or even Rick Neuheisel, but I doubt they will.

Its going to take more than money to get an 'A-list" coach in there. Seems to me there is a lot of baggage around that athletic department,

I know a few people who are close to Maryland athletics, and not one of them thinks they are going to get Chip Kelly. Or Nick Saban.

The closest I have heard someone "wishing" is that Mark Richt gets tired of the expectations at Georgia and asks about the Maryland job.

It seems like they don't know what they are doing in football. How does their program gain any advantage by firing a coach mid-season and turning over the keys to Mike Locksley? That said, they might win the national title in basketball this year, which would be good for them and the conference.

Doesn't make much logical sense, but Edsall must have pissed someone important off.

Don't know who will be available to take over, but money won't be an object.

I wonder if Edsall shook their hand(s) on his way out the door....

Anyone have an idea on what happened that they canned him mid year? Had to really piss someone off big time.

Big money has a lot to say. I am not a fan of Edsel, but parading him before the media after leaking his dismissal is inexcusable. Colleges are starting to act quickly when recruiting begins to crumble. Also, with the team only meetings, it is apparent he had lost the team,

Didn't Jim Delany seek the authority to override decisions of member institutions in the hiring and firing of coaches? Now might be a good time to exercise that power, unless Jim wants Lockley's inevitable blood on his hands.

I agree. Leaking before the OSU game that he was going to be fired the next week was just low. He then had to deal with the media circus in his press conferences for the Ohio St game and no doubt it was a distraction for both the team and coaches going into that game.

Delaney did seek authority over all big 10 university coaches but IIRC that was denied by the conference. It was the 1 time during the conference's "who can show they are more outraged than the other guy" fury that the conference stood up with some sanity. However, it was only because Delany was trying to take some authority from their universities that it was voted down. Had he said he wanted control over PSU coaches they most likely would have gladly given it to him. ;)

Money - alone - can't buy a top tier program.....not if you F up everything else.

That said, money sure helps.

Long term, UMd sould be about as well positioned financially as any program in the country.

Key financial components for college programs:

1 - Big $$$ conference. So much of any athletics dept budget comes from the Conference revenue share (primarily TV money)
In the B1G, once they get cut in for a full share, UMd will automatically move to near the top of the lists

2 - Gate revenue from football. Not great for UMd right now, but long term, playing a B1G schedule, it should be at least OK.....and if they get more competitive, thay have a HUGE population base to draw from

3 - Compliment the Big Dog (football) with a decent revenue producing Mens' Hoops program.
UMd is certainly well-positioned to be able to do this moving forward.

4 - A big money donor with a sweet spot for your program (ala Oregon/Nike, OklaSt/Pickens etc)
UMd has one of the strongest situations in the country....with the UA guy among others.

If their Admin can finally stop Fing everything up (in both Football and Mens' Hoops) they are going to be one of the top revenue programs in the nation........off the top of my head I would guess they would be AT LEAST Top 20 in the nation by the end of the decade (by which time the full B1G cuts will be in place)

Holy excrement! What an arrogant ass. His popularity must have taken a huge hit after that. I would have loved to hear his rationale for that. It had to be the convoluted.
