Men's Lacrosse gets commit from 8th grader

FWIW my son's 10th grade teammate verballed to PSU as a 9th grader...

Having watched my two kids in lacrosse for the past 5yrs - i can say that the outliers stand out quite easily... Proud to say my boys are good - but the "it" kids simply smoke everyone else out there... Fun to watch this sport in the club, modified, JV , and varsity levels :)

Long Island is the hotbed for lax...

Tambroni doesn't have a choice but to play this game. Hopkins started it and everyone has followed suit. This nonsense is what is helping create parity in college lacrosse. Teams are filling their recruiting classes by the beginning of the kids' freshmen year. So many kids grow and improve after their freshman year that the top teams are missing on a lot of talent and taking kids who have, at times, peaked athletically.

Crazy, but it is creating parity. Hell the top 25 D3 lacrosse teams would beat probably 1/3 of all D1 lax teams. Think about that.

Yeah, a couple of interesting things, though:

1. Hopkins is good, but no longer the force that it once was. Is this a function of loading its roster with too-early recruits, some of whom don't pan out as hoped 6 years later? This relates to the issue of parity that somebody raised above--clearly, so-called second-tier teams are scooping up overlooked/later developing players later in the recruiting game, after the Hopkins and UVAs of the world have already filled their spots. See, e.g., Rob Pannell.

2. You see teams loading up their rosters, and some of the kids never play. Haven't seen that happen to an 9th/8th grade commit yet--that would be embarrassing.

3. These early commits are easy for coaches to do, because lax players rarely get full rides. Coaches carve up scholarships among 3 or 4 kids.

The article says he committed. But, did we offer him? Just asking.

this is very true, Son2 played spring club with a kid (14 year olds) who was an absolute stud. He went to Albany and DOMINATED. It was so obvious he was D1.

5’7” 180#.... that’s among the reasons that Lax is pretty damn cool... i’ve seen those little gnats that can bug the shit out of big boy middies and D-poles...

FWIW - My kids have been on the field with at least 5 of the guys on that roster ... probably more, not counting TD Ierlan who fled Albany a couple years back (with great consequence to PSU last spring)...

UA is great fun. Remember those crazy Indians? 2 of my favs ever.

Montclair, a top 20 D3, would NEVER beat Lafayette. Take it back.

You are dating yourself sluggo. Most on this board have never heard of Wood.

As for early commits...50% or more never pan out. I know a few UA AA’s that never stepped into the field in their collegiate career. Ne-ver. Like every sport, the collegiate level is a complete crap shoot. Many things have to go right not the least of which is luck. What is the old investing mantra? “Past performance is not a predictor of future returns”
I was around when Brian won the hardest (fastest?) shot contest at the Naval Academy stadium. IIRC he hit 110mph with a shot on goal, while he was in 8th grade. it seemed that got several peoples attention.
Now dont even get me started on Cottle or Mullen.

I live in howard county md, I'd say that this is the epicenter for girls lacrosse and probably boys too. At one of the top public hs, they cut multiple girls who had either a partial scholarship at a d2 or played at d3 because they had 4 freshman make varsity. All4 were d1 verbals by 9th grade.

I would agree with you and add Baltimore county. Our Arlington McLean Alexandria travel teams would get smoked by that area but not by the Long Island teams. I am sure Cabel has changed that you may know of who I speak. He is nuts.
