Last night the men's VB team beat Lewis, the 2015 NCAA NC by a 3-2 score in an away venue.

PSU is 10th ranked and so far this year has beat #12 USC 3-0; lost to #5 UCLA 3-1; lost to #6 Loyola, the 2014 NC, 3-1 and beat #9 Lewis 3-2.

For those who do not follow men's volleyball, they compete in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA). The EIVA season will start in a few weeks. They typically play west coast teams and Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) teams early in the season, similar to non conference football games.

PSU plays Ball State and IPFW, two MIVA teams who are generally competitive, next week end.

Prior to about 2 years ago, the west coast winner, the MIVA winner and the EIVA winner, plus one wild card (generally a west coast team) went straight to the final four as only 4 teams made it to the playoffs.

Starting two years ago, a fourth conference was formed in the Carolinas and now six teams are selected with the four lowest rated involved in two 'play in' matches to arrive at the final four teams.

PSU has been required to play in the 'play in' match both years and has won both times, preserving their consecutive final four participation streak which is now 17 years.

I would think that has to be a record, and a great bar bet.

There is some additional significance this year because PSU hosts the NCAA tournament.

Thus, if we get to the final 4, we have a slight HC advantage.

I still think it is a long shot, but there is a chance all could go right and we could seriously compete for an NCAA championship in men's VB.

Considering only 21 there only 21 division I schools Penn State should be near the top every year. Even those division one schools only few have the resources to compete with Penn State. Do you think Sacred Heart, St. Francis or NJIT have the resources of Penn State. Even the streak of final four is kind of an overblown thing considering all they have to do is win the EVIA. It for years have been made up of small division I, division II, division III schools.

Current EVIA Conference Members:
University of Charleston (WV)
George Mason University
Harvard University
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)
Princeton University
Sacred Heart University
Saint Francis University (PA)

It is an achievement to win anything for 17 consecutive years.

It might not be a big deal to win the EIVA regular season, but it is much more tenuous to win the EIVA playoffs 17 straight years. There could easily be a night where you are off and say Harvard is on and you lose in five.

The fact there are only 21 schools have nothing to do with it and probably makes it tougher.

The VB scholarship limit is 4.5 per school. If there are 21 x 4.5 players worth anything in high school volleyball, all 21 teams can gather up players. It's not like women's VB where, with 12, a coach can afford to miss and two players who never can meet standards just sit at the end of the bench.

I would agree making the final 4 is less in men VB than say hoops or women's soccer where it starts out with 64, especially playing in the EIVA.

Also, along the way, they have won 2 NCs and played in the final 4 other times.
