Looks like two people died who were high up on the mast. Others injured. Ship had 200 on board.

Saw that, WOW apparently Mexico and Navy shouldn't be in the same sentence. Sad really for the families.

Obviously, that ship is ceremonial for PR events. But it is unfathomable that they didn't check to see the clearance of the bridges that they were going to cross under before setting sail. As part of the pagentry, dozens of sailors are sent up onto the masts as they parade by with the cool lighting and music. So not only didn't they check, nobody looked forward to realize what was about to happen and get those sailors off the masts and down to the deck. New reports suggest that there was a mechanical failure but if so, get the guys down to safer locations!

It reminds me of the old ethnic joke about a certain Eastern European nation that decided to make a better submarine. Twelve sailors were lost when, in an effort to improve ventilation, the screen doors didn't provide the hoped-for outcome when they dove.

ABC reported "the captain, who was maneuvering the ship, lost power and mechanical function, and the current caused the ship to go right into the pillar of the bridge."

why would they not order the sailors down from being up in the masts when they lost power and all hell was about to break loose? Seems like a lot of lives could have been saved.

Did they have time? There were 80 people on 147' masts.

They would also have to unhook their safety harnesses.

I knew as soon as I saw the thread title that someone would turn it into a political and/or ethnic post.

Apparently the 2 who died unhooked their harnesses trying to get down and fell to their deaths. The rest ended up dangling while still attached.
