Michael Johnson Jr. in transfer portal

Probably for the best -- for him and for us, given the 85 crunch we're up against.

Really talented kid, but probably not ideally suited for Kirk C's offense. If he's behind Roberson on the depth chart, then it's hard to see a path to playing time in his near future. It doesn't get any easier with Bowens and Veilleux joining.

Best of luck to the young man. He'll have some interested suitors.

I know you're joking but the guys on the 247 podcast agreed that Veilleux is the best QB that CJF gotten to commit assuming he signs the papers in the winter.

As far as expectations while still in high school, probably true. Hopefully he fulfills those expectations and breaks a bunch of Trace’s records.

Yes, a joke. That said, I remember the excitement when Johnson signed with PSU. Could his athleticism have made a difference for us down the road?

Assuming Veilleux signs and Clifford stays after this year, we'd be looking at 6 QB's on next years roster. Something had to give. He had offers from Bama and Florida State out of h.s. so I believe he'll land in a good spot.

This is an example of why the portal is good. The portal allows the kids who get passed to find alternatives and also gets the program away from being locked into valuable scholarships that won't impact play.

I would assume CJF would have signed the papers to let him transfer under the old rules being the situation with 6 QB but some coaches may not have.

They could do it before the portal.

Trace was a great QB for PSU. Hard to find players that play like that throughout their career

Certainly the point of the portal....that and avoiding lawsuits. But it should be restricted more than it is. Pretty sad that kids do so during season. And go to teams on the schedule!

Student athletes should only be permitted to so during off season. For football, allow it at the end of regular season but before bowl games. Not during spring practices. Allowed again after spring game up until fall practice begins.

Not bad for a pop-gun arm.

I remember saying this would happen when both he and Roberson signed to same class. Oh the stones that were thrown at me by the recruiting “experts”. It was always common sense. Whoever was behind the other would leave since they’d never play. Crazy concept.
