Mike Nesmith, Monkees, RIP

at age 78

documentary on the "wrecking crew" session musicians in LA in 60s is really interesting talking about the Monkees. Peter Took is like "we came to the studio with our instruments and they had already recorded all the tracks without us" and Mickey Dolenz saying they made him take drum lessons so he could at least pass for drumming at live shows.

Back when I was younger, I never liked Peter, but I liked the other three. Then later I came to dislike Mike too. I mean, I'm sorry he died and I don't mean to diss him, but since it's the topic I'm giving my opinion. I liked Micky & Davy but not Mike & Peter.

I saw that documentary about the Wrecking Crew that someone else mentioned too. Yes, Peter and Mike (who already were musicians, unlike Davy & Micky) thought they were going to get to actually play on the records and were annoyed when they found out otherwise.

That's the same documentary where session bass player Carol Kaye reveals that she wrote the bass line to Sonny & Cher's "The Beat Goes On." Also, Hal Blaine was in that. He played on 150 Top 40 singles in the 60s and 70s, includng 40 #1s, although he wasn't in any band (assuming you don't count the informal Wrecking Crew).

That was good documentary. The Wrecking Crew was amazing. I didn't know that Glen Campbell was considered one of the truly great guitar players. He gets mad respect in the Wrecking Crew. Mickey doesn't get enough credit. He was a great singer. He pretty much shared the lead vocals with Davey! He was Circus Boy!
