The Big Ten has not had a quarterback taken in the first round since Penn State's Kerry Collins in 1995, but some feel the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Hackenberg is worthy despite some awful play in 2014 and 2015 (10th and ninth in the conference in passing efficiency). He went 0-2 against Northwestern, failing to throw a touchdown pass. He started 1-for-10 at Ryan Field in 2015 but completed 20 of his final 30.
Fitzgerald: "I've got a lot of respect for his skill set. Coaching against him, I thought he was the total package — great awareness of coverage concepts, big-time arm, toughness. He got hit quite a bit. He kept getting up."
Brown (db Coach): "You can see the talent, especially when he got into a rhythm and got the ball off. When he didn't do that, he was under duress. He's a big, strong guy who can throw an out to the wide field and not have a problem. A lot of smoke on the ball."
Harris: "He put me down (on the turf) one time, helmet to helmet, a bigger guy. He definitely is very confident back there. He wore (his emotions) on his sleeves, and that may have gotten him in trouble. You could tell he expected greater things from his teammates and got frustrated.
