Basketball Minnesota defeats Penn State, 69-61

Well here we go. Will we have life or not vs a below average Minny team? This is a big game if you look at in terms of making the BTT or not. The loser becomes a favorite to not make the conference tourney.

Made the mistake of tuning into this currently pathetic game. Losing 2-0 after 4 minutes. Offense looks awful and disorganized. Our bball program is cursed.

Up 25-21 at half but doing everything possible to blow it. We were up 25-15 but close the last 2 minutes with 3 turnovers and zero points getting outscored 6-0.

PSU doesn't have a PG with Ace playing off the ball. They don't have a post player (or rim defender) w/o Konan.

Hicks thrived off of Baldwin drives and kick outs but he's been neutralized now that he doesn't have anybody to create for him.

Ace 2 pts, 2 assists, 3 TOs

Dunn made some baskets. Dillione has disappeared. Kern forces things and turns the ball over, I assume because he feels like someone has to step up and make things happen.

Minny shooting 62% this half.
Losing points in the paint 32-20.
Dumb reach in fouls by Kern. Baldwin is forcing shots.

Minny takes the lead. I'm not sure how they turn things around.

I don't know how much Baldwin's back hurts. I don't want to be too critical because maybe he shouldn't even be playing. But he looks like a football player just going through the motions in a bowl game before opting out in the second half.

PSU quit and is now getting run out.

Defense has been horrible. Minny shooting 70% in the second half.

Why is Nzeh in the game? PSU needs 10 pts in the last 2 minutes which means they need TOs and 3s. Nzeh has no offense and misses 2 FTs. Ugh!

We have had many lay ups hang on the rim and stay out. Couple that with their #24 unexpectedly lighting it up- we deserve to lose.
Carter hit the bottom of the rim on a layup.

I've always enjoyed watching PSU basketball. They're not usually very good but they've at least been competitive. They're not competitive anymore. When was the last time they lost 8 out of 9?

I abandoned ship at 56–48. Like I said at the beginning of the game, our program is cursed. It just cannot get over the hump. I went to school in the mid to late 90s and we had players like Lisicky and Booth and the BJC was packed when the team was good back then. This team tonight looked like absolute crap. It was almost as if they didn’t want to win.

FIRE RHOADES!!! We’re probably not even going to make our own conference tournament with a starting lineup of mostly seniors. WHAT AN EMBARRASSMENT!

The players didn’t play hard for coach tonight. Not sure he’s the answer. Basic fundamentals were missing. The players look like they couldn’t wait for the game to be over.
In the era of NIL - do our players believe that they are not being properly compensated vis-a-vis their peers?

I've seen similar job performance behavior in the work place.

You gave Parkhill 8 years
You gave DeChellis 8 years
You gave Chambers 8 years.

Why does Rhodes only get 3?
In today's era, 8 is far too long if u make one or zero tournaments. The old days of managing the coaching decisions like that should be over under Kraft. If Rhoades can't get a team into the tournament after four full seasons, he should be done.

That could be the answer. It was truly an awful performance with zero energy, at home no less. There’s no excuse for what happened on that court tonight.

Me, personally? I'm just tired of it. That, and expectations, hope and changing landscape. In the past, we'd usually have flashes of hope for the future, even in the bad seasons. We'd be the underdog, we'd scrap out some big wins against teams we shouldn't beat, we'd come close and lose a few more, then we'd look like poo against a bunch of others. But we'd have a player, or two or three, and those unexpected wins to keep us going. "If he can just ..." going into year after year.

Here, we had seemed to have turned a corner as a program, and then Micah left ... but Rhoades brought renewed hope and possible instant success, bringing in those transfers that were successful under him in the past. And this was supposed to be the season ... battle-hardened vets, with a new superstar recruit coming in. And we now look worse than ever. Effort, production ... pffft. Goodman had his injury, but he looks completely overmatched. We lose so much next year and we don't have much of anything coming back to hang hope on. And the trajectory of the season had us start out with that hope, and now it's just a flatline.

And these days, there's no real expectation we can even build anything. Year to year, you can have oodles and oodles of transfers. So there's no "if we can just have this guy develop, and then this guy, and ..." We have almost nothing ... and Goodman could just bolt before we even get to see if he's anything.

Other than that, I'm still optimistic.

This season is a lost cause. I do wonder with a healthy Ace and Puff what does the season look like? We would at least make the BTT. How hurt is Ace? Or not much at all and he has mailed it in. I dunno.

Rhodes should get a 3rd year because of the injuries and simply give him more time. I did not see this game or the OSU game but if the team looks like they are not trying hard which people are observing then that is a red flag. Gotta see marked improvement next season as in making the Dance or at a minimum the NIT or need to let him go.

Rhodes needs more time.
I honestly think he's a good coach. The problem the team is built around Baldwin and he's either injured or he's lost interest.

We lose Baldwin, Kern, Hicks, Johnson, & Dunn.

Next year is a rebuild. We have Konan who has been better than expected. Goodman was a top 100 recruit but he obviously has a way to go. Mingo is the highest rated player PSU has had but he'll be a freshman. I don't know if Stewart or Carter will develop. Dillione has been a big disappointment. PSU needs 2 more players from the portal who are ready to play. Can Rhodes/Kraft pull it off?

Possibly the worst program in the Big Ten. And in conjunction with the women's team this is flat out embarrassing
I don't think there is any question they are the worst in the league... they will not win again this season. The last two home games should have been wins but alas they are just outmanned and with the key injuries we have it is a downward spiral. Rhodes wanted to be here but this place is snake bit.

Seems like this is the time to play the younger players and prepare for next season, and Rhoades did play Goodman, Carter and Stewart tonight. Maybe we'll see them get more minutes going forward.

Just too many turnovers tonight. Right out of the gate at home too. Really missed Konan tonight too. And gave up the open looks for 3's that Minny drained.

If next year is a rebuild year (still don't believe that's a thing in the portal era) then what was this year?
