Moment of Reflection. Who would ever thought in less than 5 years...

Penn State's Football team would be ranked #2 in the country at any point in time within 5 years of the sanctions being accounted?

Truly one of the most amazing accomplishments in college sports history.

You might have been able to get 1,000 to 1 odds in Vegas in 2012.

I haven't seen too many feelgood stories about Penn State's resurgence since last season, probably because few in the media feel good about it. They thought Penn State Football should have been killed off back in 2011-2012. Eat shit, folks.

As much credit as Franklin and the current staff deserve for where we are and where we might be going, this has as much to do with our incredible fan base, our storied history, many former players, and a lot of young players--many of whom nobody will remember--who came here for the right reasons.

I didn't used to like our "WE ARE... " chant at games since it seemed unoriginal, but now I yell it at the top of my lungs...

SMU got the death penalty in 1987 and hasn't been relevant yet. They even tried to get into the Big 12 when ATM left for the SEC and were denied.

PSU got the most crippling sanctions short of the death penalty in 2012 - it was really life in NCAA prison with no parole. Five years later thanks to BOB, CJF, some exceptional players and a loyal fan base, we are back.

Surma, Suhey, Peetz, Frazier, Joyner, Masser, Erickson, Emmert, etc., are not pleased.
I think they're pleased. Heck, they're probably patting themselves on the back a and taking credit for it.

It's not that they wanted to kill PSU football, it's that they were willing to sacrifice PSU football if that's what it took to cover their own rear ends.

But Sandy is thrilled - and so am I. Her vote of confidence last year when the press had Franklin supposedly on the hot seat was important.
Thanks goodness for Franklin. He not only brought the program back from the sanctions but also from the dark ages it had been operating in since 2000.

Of course they're pleased. How many tickets can each one of them get their mudpacks on to sell for $450 on stubhub?
I assume many of them sit in the suites and network during big games.

quibble... it's not "less than 5 years", sanctions were announced in summer 2012 and we have played 5 full seasons of football since then. This is season 6.

That isn't meant to diminish the accomplishment and how resilient our program as been.

Sometimes events happen in sports that no team, or person, or organization can stop. Our opponents can negative recruit, they can pimp their own program, officials can give us crap calls but success overcomes all.
I thought we wouldn't see the top 10 until next year, hats off to Coach Franklin and OB.
Our biggest enemy is the press and their lack of support, their own favorites, and having that bone to pick against us, just because WE ARE.

Just interested skip, what's the deal with your sig photo? Are you in the business or just a fan?

The Paterno suit was huge. Mauti/Zordich, BOB, Hackenberg committing (and sticking), CJF.

Once the final remnants of the sanctions were removed, my prediction was for 2016 to be the nadir of our talent/production level, 2017 to be an upswing and 2018 to be back to "normal" strength. Boy, do I seem to have been off.

It's actually P.S.U. 'escapee' (how it feels when I reflect on some of my undergrad antics).

No, I'm just a lobbyist in D.C. But, I liked the show and identify with the photo.

Lobbyist huh. Definitely similarities there. The lobbyist is the Washington version of the Madison Avenue bad boy media salesman. I've been there many times, always stay at the Sofitel in Lafayette Square........love that hotel. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum...broadcast specialist to political groups (part of my job). What a racket!!!

Sig pics always mean something so that makes sense.

Yes thanks for CJF (JoePa 2.0) !

Also thanks to Joe for creating the culture that helped carry us thru

Thanks Joe

For those who want to forget about what happened to Joe and move on, think about this:

Rip started the move of PSU football into the upper echelon, but Joe consummated it. What would PSU be like if Joe hadn't turned us into the Beast of the East? Well, look around at places like UMASS, Kansas, Indiana State, UCONN, Ohio, etc. I think UMASS is the most relevant - a large state school out in the middle of nowhere in a state dominated by elite private institutions (MIT, BC, Harvard, Tufts). Here in PA it would be Penn, CMU, Bucknell, Nova. I really think without the reknown that Joe and "Success with Honor" brought to PSU, we'd be like UMASS or UCONN.

Could someone else have done it? Maybe. But when PSU was a second tier program and Michigan and the Patriots came after Joe (just like the big dogs went after Urban Meyer at Utah or Kelly at Cincy or Bo Pellini), Joe stayed and built upon his success to make us what we are today. And that is why I won't move on. I'll celebrate Coach Franklin and offer a heart felt "thank you" to him and the staff. But I won't let what Joe did be forgotten and I hope his memory achieves justice.

It was never about Paterno for me. It was, and is, about money. It's the only language that is observed. It is the only voice I have.

PSU: We're broke, our kids in your particular college would benefit from your donation. OK.

Keep your money, you must have enough for fines and settlements....and then to call me part of a sick culture? And send me a donation envelope? OK. Sure.

Don't know if you get the Audience channel (#239 on DirecTV), but they are replaying the Madmen series straight through, 1 episode per night Monday thru Friday. The final show (Episode 14 of Season 7) is on this Tuesday, but then they'll start all over Weds. with Season 1, Episode 1.

I was a huge fan of the series, and have now enjoyed watching it again.
