Thinking about this "focus on the running game to open up the passing game" concept of Moorhead's. In a way it makes sense. The offense sets up in a spread formation, placing receivers all over the line of scrimmage, sideline to sideline. This 8 and 9 defenders in the box which Penn State has been seeing will have to go away. Either that or the defense is going to be allowing a receiver to be uncovered or at least in man to man. The Lion WRs have good to great size and some(Blacknall & Polk to say the least) have blazing speed. If the defense has no safety over the top, it will open the field up. Defending the spread offense virtually requires deep safety help. So, the defense must cover each WR or TE at least one on one and have at least one safety deep. That eliminates all 8 and 9 men in the box defensive schemes. Turning Barkley loose on just 6 or 7 defenders should yield some spectacular results
