I thought they were bad but I didn't think they were OMG bad.
Have any of the Lb'rs they drafted panned out?
And they haven't had a decent secondary since 2003.
Just a god awful performance so far.

I don't follow the Steelers moves all that closely but who is responsible for drafting/ free agency moves in that organization? Does Tomlin have the final decision?

Please use all draft picks on the secondary... That unit is god awful!

You would think practicing against the Steelers receivers would make you better?

Is Tomlin on the hot seat with the media in Pittsburgh? That chest thumping and pointing to the camera was a bit clownish for a coach IMO.

So why rush/blitz 2-3 guys every play in the first half and leave a shitty secondary on an island. @nd hald they drop the lb's 8-12 yds in coverage and play zone in the secondary and Osweiler is clueless....is there a reason the steelers don't do this from the get go? This is a zone coverage team...they aren't good enough to play zero coverage... with the Pittsburgh offense the defense should be playing like this all the time...

I felt like I was in a glass case of emotion during that game! Great win. Win the next two and in...Nobody wants the Steelers in Rd 1.

Antonio Brown isn't human.

But they are good enough to WIN!!!!!

When the lb's were dropping into coverage instead of leaving the middle of the field wide open the Steeler secondary looked ten times more agressive and were all over the field....this has to become the MO of this defense...the front four isnt bad...they can get some pressure and control the run game....hell... with Ben and these receivers you don't need to be like the 86 bears....just get some stops....

Tomlin does make a lot of mistakes. Watch a Packers game sometime and how McCarthy operates though, they all make similar mistakes under that microscope. Coughlin has won two super bowls and he makes more stupid decisions than any coach I have ever seen at any level. Tomlin overall though is a great motivator and leader. He is a good head coach. His record isn't one of the most winningest @ 44 because he sucks. They have assembled one of the most talented offenses in NFL history(literally) and it is coming together now. If the defense can even be average this team is a big threat.

You sure about that?

Ive seen almost every down and its the same thing every week....they come out and try to dominate by blitzing every down, constantly puttting guys in m-t-m trouble with really good wr's...they get in trouble and always get back to dropping very athletic lb's into coverage, being selective with blitzing Simmons and Shazier, making the db's into effective zone coverage guys who hammer receivers and they end up looking like 2 different teams. My question...why wait? You are who you are...and with Ben's offense if you give him a lead its over...

This I agree with.

Butler adjusted it though and it was a display in the second half. The defense shows flashes. If they ever do put it together The Pats are going to have a hell of a rematch.

Not really. More so with the talk show callers. Most media defend him. Given what this team has gone through this year, with injuries to key players seemingly everywhere, I think he's done a real good job to have them where they are. I agree though on the chest thumping thing. The guy sometimes seems to take himself, and the game in general, far too seriously.

If Steelers win out it looks like they will get Denver again in Denver for Round one of the playoffs...maybe with Peyton.
I would prefer the Bengals. Winner of next weeks Denver/Cincy Monday night game will determine the opponent.
Again the Steelers need to win out

I'd argue Lawrence Timmons, Lamar Woodley, and Bud Dupree have been just fine early LB picks in the past decade. Shazier is yet to be determined. Jones hasn't panned out. That's hardly a bad track record on drafting when your earliest picks are always second half of first round.

Here's the thing, the NFL is built for parity. Part of that involves making it almost impossible for a team to be great or even good in all facets. There's always at least one weakness on a given team, and when a team spends a couple years fixing that, another hole opens elsewhere. It's not that the Steelers don't understand the secondary needs work. It's that they also had to spend 4 years building an OL because it was a disaster. Then they needed a RB, and a host of LBs as that group aged, and WRs as Hines got old and Wallace was heading out the door. If they had instead focused on the secondary, someone would be on here asking who has final say on the OL, because it's a mess! They know it's bad, and it'll be the next area they address, but it doesn't mean someone dropped the ball in the past.

Next year the Steelers will get Pouncey and Leveon Bell back, the 2nd round CB from Ole Miss that missed the entire season, and whatever DBs they draft early this year. I think the Steelers are best positioned to win the Super Bowl next year. But they really have as good a shot as anyone this year anyway.

I really like the way Timmons plays.

If jets lose to NE it's pretty much over. Jets have no tie breaker over Pittsburgh or KC.

Yes I am. Their defense sucks. They made a very average QB look like Tom Brady.
The reason they won is because of the offense Ben and Brown (actually all the WR's) and Williams are
playing out of their minds. With any kind of average defense this team could win the Superbowl.

I'll give you Timmons although I'm not even sure about him. Shazier maybe if he could ever stay healthy. Jones is a bust.

I think the Steelers defense is somewhere between the way they played in the 1st half vs the way they played in 2nd half.

The scheme was better in the 2nd half, and the personnel in the secondary was better. Is it enough to make a deep run in the playoffs? Probably not, but we'll see.

What scares me is that they start every game in an attack mode where they send multiple blitzers on 2 out of 3 plays. This means they are dropping only 1 lb into coverage and they are playing M-T-M with their corners and the team thinks #41 is one of their best cover guys! WTH....he couldn't cover me. Please....keep him on the bench for God's sake.

Agree but this is part of the "issues" I have with the DC. He seems to do this in every game I seen of theirs.
Lets just say he runs some pretty "strange" schemes.
But the defense does need a talent and youth injection. When Ben Gay is your best defensive back you've got issues.
I know they needed to address the O-line the last few years and I think they have done that, now they need to draft better for the defense.

JMO but I think their offense is good enough to get them pretty deep into the playoffs.

We've been saying for years that The Steelers need to draft secondary help. We need a couple good CBs and another LB. Also need to draft a QB in the later rounds to mold into a backup for Ben.

In this very game, wasn't it Shazier that picked off a pass late to stop the game tieing drive. I am disappointed when the Steelers take oh-high-ya state players as they seem to have a much higher chance of ending up suspended or cut for character issues, but when Shazier is healthy he plays pretty well. He just seems to light to stay healthy. I was hoping he would spend the off season with Harrison and add some muscle.....

And the DE Heyward is a nice player as wall. The son of Iron Head.....

The problem is well documented as the secondary, and the Steelers spend two draft picks on DB's this past year. Unfortunately their 2nd round pick, a corner, is out of the year with an injury.

No QB drafted in "the later rounds" will be a capable backup for Ben..... Talented QB's are picked early in the draft, and for a backup it's usually a much better plan to pick up an experienced QB like the Steelers did with Charlie Batch a while back.... Then in a few years, when Ben has only a few years left, draft their next starting QB in the first round.

It seems that Jones, who I was hoping would be cut after watching him a couple years in the pre-season, is now a capable backup...... But can they re-sign him as a backup?

Jones is really bad. I wouldn't put it past Big Ben to play another 5-6 years but if he went down that is not a good backup.
