They better be careful and not blow next year's #1 draft pick.
I’ve also been a life-long Phillies fan and have learned over the years (I remember as a very young kid having the picture of the 1950’s Whiz Kids over my bed) that you just have to take the bad with the worst. This Phillies team is beyond redemption and will be bad for years to come. I continue to look fro reasons for hope or even moderate interest, but see nothing. There are certain things hard to fix, like stupid. I understand the team is beyond hope, but little that’s done in the field or front office makes sense. Here’s some recent egregious examples:
1. Ryan Howard has an OPS of .820 vs. RHP and .542 vs. LHP. He should never see the field against a LHP. He’s now just a one-trick pony situational player.
2. Get what you can for Hamels. Pap, Chooch and any older player that has no future with the team. Branch Rickey said “Trade a player a year early rather than a year late”, a message that Amaro never got. Both Utley and Rollins are below the Mendoza line, and Utley’s trade value is now zero.
3. Bringing Aumont up for a start yesterday was the expected disaster as he just doesn’t know how to pitch in the big leagues.
I’ve read several ratings of the Philies farm system and they are rated around no. 20 in most of them, so there is also a lot of work to be done before the talent pipeline delivers quality players.
I do not believe there is a quick fix to getting the Phils back to relevancy as going the free agent route has its drawbacks. If there is a plan, it should be for sustained growth to ensure some more strong runs that we had during the 2004-2011 period. I’ll can’t stop being a fan, but my interest this year has a more than usual morbid tone.
