I haven't read a single post yet so I don't know what either the crazies or the more enlightened posters have written, so these are my opinions, unbiased by anyone else, whatever group you would put me in. Not that I care.
Well, tough loss, but I'm very proud of the way the Nittany Lion football team played today. Very proud. They played like men today, not the young, wet behind the ears underclassmen that most of them are. They just ran out of time or I think they would've pulled this one out. We were actually hitting a team in the mouth most of the second half and I hadn't seen that against a really good opponent until today. Some of our guys grew up today and it was great to see.
Hack. I wish this young man nothing but the best in the League. He could've bailed on PSU and didn't when he had his choice of any school in the land. I will always remember him for that and be grateful. He's one of the program savers. Kudos to Christian Hackenberg.
As for the future, we'll still have a pretty young team next season, but I'm done with moral victories after today. I don't know how good Stevens is as a QB or the incoming Zembiec, but I don't think we have a QB problem next season based on what I saw from Trace McSorley today. After taking a couple series to get acclimated, Trace rose to the occasion and played remarkably well against a really, really good defense. So whoever wins the job this spring will be pretty good and Trace put himself firmly in the driver's seat this afternoon. Lot's of moxie and seems to have a great sense in the pocket. The 2 TD throws were picture perfect even though the catches were great too. Trace may be a special player. The guy won 3 state titles as a prep star in Virginia, and that says "winner" to me.
Offensive line. Everything about this team seems to revolve around the strength of the offensive line. Our starters are back, but I don't think they all start next season. I'm thinking that out of Gonzales, Bates, Jenkins, Sorrell, Wright, that one or two of those guys end up starters. I will be curious to see how our new OC uses these players. This can be a good offense with the right scheme and guy calling the plays.
Franklin. When a team doesn't quit like PSU didn't today that always tells me something about the head coach. No heads down. No crying. Just go out, play 60 minutes, try to get better, and see where the chips fall. We did that. Ton of credit to James Franklin for that.
I have many more thoughts, but for brevity, I'll hold some of those for later. Suffice it to say, I am very, very hopeful for next season and the future. Today, We Are.....Penn State. We're getting close folks.
I think we are going to start winning very, very soon. OSU loses a ton, MSU loses a ton, Michigan loses a ton and we got lots of good players coming back and some very good talent ready to step in.
As a guy who's been watching sports for nearly 50 years, this team has the feel that it will soon take a step up. Many of our guys took over the team today. The Hack era, may the good Lord bless him, is over and the new guys are going to make this their team. We saw it in the 2nd half. Can't wait for kickoff next season.
