NCAA grants waiver for player, who signed with agent, to return to college

NCAA lets undrafted punter return to school first brick inThe wall???

he had hired an agent

As the saying goes, anything that looks too good to be true probably isn’t. The latest college football news from the NCAA at first blush looks too good to be true.

Via Michelle Gardner of the Arizona Republic, the NCAA has granted a special waiver to Arizona State punter Michael Turk, allowing him to return to school and play football.

Turk, the nephew of former NFL punter Matt Turk, was permitted to return even though he entered the draft and hired agents. Turk went undrafted and unsigned in the aftermath of the draft.

Gardner says that this type of request has never before been granted. Here’s hoping that it’s the beginning of a trend that would allow players to enter the draft and, if not drafted or unhappy with their draft status, could return to school if they still have eligibility.

"Turk was granted this waiver due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic preventing his participation in pro days, team visits or in-person workouts ahead of the draft."

But, he was invited to and worked out at the combine. That means any UDFA that left early should be eligible to return OR he's transferring to Ann Arbor.

They should allow kids to return. Why not.

Everyone would declare every year. That would allow everyone to hire an agent, which has been one of the big differences between being a pro and being an amateur. Teams wouldn't be able to plan for who is and how is not on their roster until well after the NFL draft which is probably after spring practice.

So PSU could have 85 kids declare for the draft and hire an agent. In May, all but 5 tell CJF they are coming back. Well, they don't, they have their agent call CJF and they negotiate if they are coming back to PSU or going to a different school.

Minus the agent, this is already the case in basketball. Lamar Stevens did it. Since the rule was in place a few years ago, PSU has had one player leave with the option of coming back- Stevens. There’s no mass exodus of 10+ players declaring every year, on any team

I don’t get this. Few if any punters get drafted any way.

yeah...agreed...but basketball is a far different sport. 15 vs 85 for one. the number of kids drafted: NBA 60 total picks, NFL 255. You also have much more diverse needs in football due to having 22 positions.

One of the issues that comes to mind is what happens when a player falls in the draft, from say a 1st round to a 3rd round?

Can he return to college the following year, and hope to improve his selection the following year?

That’s NCAA baseball

There would need to be limits re pro versus amateur that the players would need to abide by.

I do not believe 85 players a year would declare. That's extreme. Juniors and RS Sophs would be the likely candidates.

Unfortunately I see this as the direction this is going. These college athletes have had their freedoms limited as the NCAA and colleges have made bank $$$$ from their sports. We hate it as fans but the players IMO love it.

So if $ exchanges hands between an agent and a player and then the player isn't drafted, gets a waiver and returns to school...the $ is just ignored??? $ money could go either way, I guess.

But there's no option to return to school if you're undrafted.

There is a pending NCAA rule to allow this, but it needs an NBA rule change first.

Agent has become a "friend of the family" so it's OK

Ummm...... not all 85 would be draft eligible.
