I stumbled across this record tonight and it defies belief. What do you think the NCAA record is for the most yards punted in a game? 600? 750? Answer below.

Most punting yards in a game
Record: 1,318 by Texas Tech's Charlie Calhoun on Nov. 11, 1939.
Buzz: Yep, 1,318 punting yards in one game. Calhoun punted 36 times that afternoon against Centenary (one team, Georgia Tech, punted just 32 times total last season). The game was played in a downpour and the field basically was unplayable. The teams combined to gain 30 yards of offense and for 77 punts (67 of them came on first down); the contest ended in a 0-0 tie. Calhoun's mark was one of 13 NCAA single-game records set that day, the most of any game in NCAA history.

Here's a picture of Calhoun after the game:

That game has to be the low point of offensive offense.Iowa taking a safety knowing Psu could not move the
Ball. What a miserable feeling that was.
Why would they take a safety if they knew PSU couldn't move the ball?

4th down from their own 1 up 6-2 with about 7 minutes left. They didn’t want to allow a blocked punt ior big return. Figured bring it out to the 20 and kick it, and PSU wouldn’t move into FG range. It was a painful day.

And if you had told me that day that Robbie Gould would be kicking in the NFL 15 years later, you would have needed your head examined.

Agree...and not just that, taking a safety to make the lead less than three points (meaning a FG could win the game). We also had Robbie Gould as our FG kicker (who wasn't all that good in college).

I remember driving home, a trip that takes hours, with several PSU fans in the car. It would get quiet, for maybe ten or fifteen minutes...then somebody would say "six to four" and we'd all start laughing.

That game still sounds more appealing to sit thru than the 6-4 Iowa game...
It rained, the field was unplayable, there was a reason.

6-4? There was a reason, it wasn't the weather, it wasn't the field, it wasn't mother nature, it wasn't Ferentz. Ferentz took advantage, as usual. Darn smart coach. Sad day. The Alabama FG block was a blunder, could have easily been different. 6-4 was an embarrassment and in no manner would have changed had we continued to play all day and the next.

back then many football strategist suggested to punt on 1st down if you were inside your own 10, if it was like the 10-30 punt on 1st or second down, before you could use 3 downs, you had to be like at least your 40!! so many times games just started with teams punting to each other on 1st or 2nd down!
