Next PSU coach needs to build this program to play Big Ten football.

I think the lesson of the Illinois loss is that you still have to run the damn football to win in this conference. PSU as-built can neither run the ball or stop the run. It’s probably going to have to take a complete cultural overhaul and maybe an adjustment in recruiting philosophy for offensive linemen. Maybe it’s time to stop chasing 6ft 7 320lb projects and recruit more midwestern kids that always end up on other teams depth charts that push our defensive line around at-will. We’ve lavished praise on moorhead and Yurcich at times but the one thing that runs constant in this program is the inability to run when it really matters. I’m tired of seeing our offense run around confused pre-snap, or staring at the sideline for signals.

line up, get your stance and run the GD football and beat the guy across from you. It really shouldn’t be that complicated but they sure as hell make it

I’ve been saying for some time that the emphasis on “explosive” plays and “tempo” at the expense of TOP is killing this team. Many others view TOP as unimportant in “modern” football. Look at Penn State’s wins and losses this season. PSU lost TOP against Wisconsin, Auburn, Iowa, and Illinois. The Wisconsin and Auburn games were very close games. So were Iowa and Illinois. The thing is that by the time PSU played Iowa, the D had already played a lot of minutes, and suffered injuries. People focused on SC’s injury but the injuries and run-down of the D factored into the Iowa loss and today’s Illinois loss.

The lack of a running game just makes the TOP situation worse as it does not permit ball control. The defense has to play too many minutes. As the season goes on, it just makes problems with the defense more obvious. The defense cannot handle the job, and the whole team collapses.

We’re too busy getting those sweet lights in the tunnel to worry about this minor stuff.

Oh my God….before it was “we have to get away from Big 10 football because we can’t keep up with better teams in other leagues and that’s why we can’t win big bowl games and NC’s.” Harbaugh couldn’t win sh!t because he was stuck in Big 10 football. Wiscy and Iowa can’t win sh!t because they’re stuck in Big 10 football. OSU became an SEC type team and dominates the Big, but because we lost to one bad team we need to go back to Big 10 football. Great plan.

No disagreement whatsoever about needing a competent running game. Nevertheless, PSU had a significant advantage in TOP last season...and had a losing record. Thus, as has been discussed in this forum many times, TOP does not necessarily equal wins.

For us old geezers, take a moment and think back to the 70s, 80s and 90s and the characteristics Penn State football was noted for. Do any of those characteristics still exist?
Nope. But we do have an occasional explosive chunk play, and that’s about it.
