Does this sound like Penn State’s Old Guard?

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/09/09/jerry-falwell-liberty-university-loans-227914

It looks like higher ed is a lucrative business for insiders regardless of the school. All on the backs of a crushing student debt load.

Cha-Ching!
Drove through Lynchburg about a year ago on the way to Pinehurst. It's pretty stunning the way the infrastructure down there, almost in the middle of nowhere, has grown. Most of it funded by Jerry's Kids.

There are a lot of legitimate complaints and concerns about the corruption on Penn State’s Board of Trustees, but Liberty exists on a whole different level - even down to the pool boys.

Whoa. Looks like junior doesn’t get the old rule that conforming behavior to the characterization reinforces rather than disproves the characterization.

Who in their right mind doesn't honestly believe that every college/university in the nation is the exact same way? They are all basically robbing the American Public because they are paying for all this stuff with loan money given to the students by the federal govt that 3/4 of the students will eventually default on anyway when they graduate with 100k+ in debt.

Plus, the article basically quotes disgruntled employees much the same as the disgruntled team Dr that is do the same thing with PSU.

Except you can’t default on student loans, which is the bubble inflating this entire nonsense. And “every college/university in the nation” doesn’t claim to be the paragon of virtue and judgement of others that Liberty does, so the hypocrisy and lying is newsworthy. It’s all a grift, but I guess some people don’t like it when that’s pointed out.

Is Liberty worse than the old guard unis that have $800 trillion endowments but still price fix and fleece the fed govt for $300 million fruit fly stidies?

From what I read, it appears that they use the funds as a personal slush fund.
I’m old fashioned. To me non profit is for churches and charities, not for personal gain.
OK then, embezzlement it is (and potentially private inurement violations, which may or may not be criminal).

In any event, my personal view is that the tax code should be revised to eliminate or limit the scope of nonprofit exemptions for colleges and universities. They are big businesses, plain and simple, that function as little more than massive passive investment vehicles.

Good luck with that. Once granted, entitlements never go away.

I agree with you. Our tax code is designed by lobbyists. We have next to zero IRS agents so people drive a truck thru the tax code. I wrote “ if there was justice”
Something would happen.

No doubt about that. This is more like a masturbatory law school professor wet dream thing.

But as a voter, I could probably get behind a political/budget deal where the exchange was somewhat higher marginal rates for dramatically pulling back on the availability of NP exemptions so as to limit/focus on religious/charitable purposes.

Prime example - UPMC. And no, I don't write that because of any rivalry with the Univ. of Pittsburgh. UPMC abuses its non-profit status as a research center to invest in other non-research enterprises which by extension are also tax exempt.

The entire "nonprofit/charity/NGO" gambit has become a massive scam on taxpayers all across the board. There are so many bizarre 'nonprofits' for every conceivable thingamabob that it is ridiculous.

Its time we eliminate all non profits and make every one taxable to all taxing bodies. Make the schools pay county taxes. Federal courthouses pay state and local taxes. State prisons pay local and federal taxes. All entities pay their taxes, including churches and hospitals. Look at UPMC and what a behemoth they have become......while being non taxed.

Many major cities have 40-50% of their properties as non taxable. Thats just crazy. They all benefit from roads, police, fire, schools and more. Let them pay their fair share.

Make the change revenue neutral. If every one was taxable, the overall tax rate could be reduced by some 30-40% as everyone pitches in. That would be much fairer on the current taxpayers and reduce the burden on the poor and elderly.

Yeah, the historically slow pace of redevelopment in PGH is no coincidence given that four of the largest employers in the city are nonprofits.

But this is like asking Congress to vote for a congressional pay cut. Or to get the same shitty healthcare us peasants have. It will never happen, and so the ice cream cone continues to lick itself.

Yep, and it's particularly comedically ironic given that "nonprofits" are theoretically limited in their lobbying expenditures and practices.
