I am a bit surprised at the dollar amounts in this very small fan based sport. Does anyone have info on the figures the other larger sports programs are getting. Can you imagine the numbers some of the highest recruited football guys are commanding. What about the smaller schools that are great in a certain sports like hockey.

It seems it's largely a factor of where the boosters are, what sports matter to them and how much they want to spend.

The perfect scenario in my mind is Phil Night Nike Founder and U of Oregon.

He has already donated more than $1 Billion to the University, with a fair amount of it focused on their sport's infrastructure & facilities, which are amazing by the way. It's somewhat of a blank check up there.

Now with NIL he can put whatever athletes he wants in Nike commercials or posters, pay them whatever he wants, and it's all a legitimate business expense.

Will he chose to invest in college kids rather than buildings? Who knows, but if you want to dethrone Alabama using NIL to do it, that is the kind of arrangement I see changing the whole dynamic of the NCAA. You can count the number of Phil Knight's out there on less than one hand.

The local car dealer giving kids free 4 year NIL leases for Cadillac escalades, not so much. Every college town might have a couple of those.

Big thing about wrestling is there's way less mouths to feed and one wrestler can be so impactful and the impact is very easily quantifiable. For example, if you have a NCAA champ level guy deciding between PSU and Iowa at weights both wrestlers have a hole, that's a 40 point swing, depending on where he goes. Truax let's say is about 3rd? That's still almost 30. Nagao is a similar level guy (but with more years) Football, even one superstar is hard to measure the impact because there are 22 guys on the field at a time and so many positions rely on others (what can a QB do without a OL and WRs?)

Let's give an example, assuming Iowa has a big old nothing burger at 141 this year instead of Real Woods, they are in 5th place at NCAAs this year all else equal and they aren't even bringing home a trophy. They also lose their finalist streak and thus look awful with no representation on national TV on Saturday night. You can argue that would MAJORLY set their program back. So whatever Woods is getting, you can argue it's money well spent.

Now USC ... they allegedly spent 1M on Jordan Addison, which seems like money well spent! Best WR in college football. AWESOME. We would be stoked if we got the best any weight in NCAA wrestling. What did it do for them? To be honest, not much at all. They still don't have guys who can tackle and thus ended without a PAC 12 championship even and lost to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl.

A local car dealership leased Teslas to a few of our football players. I only know this because I saw one getting out of their car at Texas Roadhouse and without asking he told my friend.

There is already a large disparity in college wrestling and i think it is a positive when we see a kid from a non power (smaller school like Uni Norther Colorado) win a championship. I think it will become more rare with NIL that kids like Alirez win at the small schools which i think will end up being bad for the sport. I hope it doesn't end up leading to fewer programs .

I sent your post to a guy at work who is a big USC fan. Will be interesting to see what he thinks. 😆
