No Groundhog Day Threads? WTF?!

Everyone was sleeping in today after being up all last night in Punxsutawney. ;)

A Phil hangover. Six more weeks of misery called February. We lived in Punxsutawney several years, right out of PSU and liked it there, very nice people. I saw many of Phil's kin at the country club in the roughs. They were courteous and respectful as Phil taught them to be. This was in the late 1970's when the cry was about cooling and how we would "freeze in the dark" according to NBC network. My sister in law, RIP, was terrified after watching it. I often thought what she thought of the warming info now. Not to start a controversy here, just remembering her as her funeral is this morning.
I remember all the major networks setting up at Gobbler's Knob due to the big winter weather, cooling, subject those winter's. It was a big deal. Of course Phil saw his shadow, I read it in the local paper delivered two hours before dawn on Ground Hogs Day. Wondered how they knew in advance?;)

I guess I should have watched the Groundhog Day movie instead of the Big Lebowski... or maybe I should have just watched them both.

I'm amazed that there are still some adults who put stock into Phil seeing his shadow or not. As one friend recently said with righteous sincerity, 'What is his track record on these predictions? I bet it's not good. Why do we even follow it?' I am certain that she thought there was some science to it. I was too stunned and a little saddened to comment. Not sure if her husband wanted to even try to explain it to her. Made me wonder if she avoids stepping on cracks.

But to me it is a fun thing, and although I've never been to Punxy, it sure seems like a good time is had by all. And I love that movie.

Ground Hog Day is Ground Hog Day...same prediction over and over. Since he’s predicted six more weeks of winter 86% of the time, we can all pretty much predict what he’s going to say next year too.:)

I think it’s you that is gullible if you think that an normally functioning adult believes in the prediction... lots of people get all worked up into a frenzy over Santa Claus, but they don’t believe in him (spoiler alert, Santa Claus isn’t real). It’s fun to talk about though, I guess.

Well, you aren't the first to call me that.....

Hey now, we have kids on this site.

By my count six weeks of winter would be 42 days bringing the end of winter to 16 MARCH. Oh how sweet that would be!

His accuracy is about 39%. That's very similar to any weather forecast beyond 4 days and people put plenty of value in those 7 day forecasts. Every football game had a pointless weather thread started around Monday this past fall.

39%? Interesting. After all these years, I'd think it would be closer to 50%. Coin-flip predictionish.

Just to make sure my post is understood, I am not suggesting that there is any science (ala the weather) behind ol' Phil and his shadow. I was merely remarking that someone I know seemed to be sincerely put off by his 'prediction' not being right more often than not. (And for which I was deemed gullible by someone who did not observe the person making the remark. A full investigation will ensue). Otherwise, if Phil did indeed nail it far more than his paltry 39%, we'd have a special Groundhog Channel to compete with The Weather Channel somewhere on our cable dials by now, no?

Wonder what the accuracy ratio is on the 'step on a crack' deal? ;)

Isn't this a Pennsylvania thing? For those who weren't keeping track, Phil sez we are having six more weeks of winter.

Having recently relocated to the south I was shocked  (sorry Bob, not outraged ) to learn Phil was not the only one!! So shocked it took me two days to post ;) .....That and I had a "Honey Do" list a mile long to finish before the Super Bowl. Go EAGLES!!!

I did, however, make groundhog cookies, as has been our habit for a number of years now (the picture is not of mine, however).

Phil is the seer of seers, prognostigator of prognosticators. He's never been wrong but his handlers have often misinterpreted his message.

Oh no! Santa isn't real? What is next, my world is shattering, I'll need therapy. I heard this doc in Michigan is excellent, Dr. Nassar sp? But he only sees women so that's out. Oh well, I still have the Easter Bunny and Buggs Bunny.
