I was trying to come up with 10 catches in Penn State football history that would comprise a poll
of which was Penn State's greatest catch (of course it's all subject to debate).

These immediately came to mind for me:

Ethan Kilmer's catch against FSU
Chuck Herd one hand in Orange Bowl
David Daniels versus BYU in Holiday Bowl
Greg Garrity Sugar Bowl
Allen Robinson vs. Michigan
Bobby Engram one-hander vs. Ohio State

What would be some others? Thank you in advance.

Those are all terrific and the one that sticks in my head more than any other is Garrity's. That aside, the subject line says "Penn State's greatest catch" and there you did not limit it to football, so I will include myself in the mix and say "my wife". For me, the throw was a "Hail Mary" but I made the catch and it brought me a lifetime of memories.:) (Yes, I know. Cliched and sappy.)

Does Gifto's interception in the Fiesta Bowl count as a catch?

I'd put Kenny Jackson's catch and pirouette against Pitt in 48-14 on the list.
Joe Jurevicious made a spectacular dive/catch/slide on a sloppy field against Auburn in a bowl game.

We talking 'great' in terms of athletic ability, or how it impacted a game? I honestly don't know if I've ever seen a better combination of both with Allen Robinson's performance against Michigan a couple years ago - he was amazing.

I think all that should be taken into consideration: the degree of difficulty, the athleticism required, the situation and magnitude of the moment, the effect the catch had on the outcome, etc.

All things considered, it has to be the Garrity TD catch.

Brett Brackett's catch against Northwestern down 21-0.

Gotta go with Allen, too. Considering the situation, behind by 7 and precious little time left, it's #1 for me.

Greg Garrity's catch won PSU their first national championship

We had the lead at the time the catch was made. I like Robinson's catch because of the situation we were in at the time. We may still have won the championship w'o Greg's catch. It's less likely that we beat Michigan w/o Allen's catch. That's all I'm saying.

You hit most of the obvious ones. I would suggest two others based on athleticism (not necessarily big game) ...

  1. Mark Rubin's amazing catch against IU in 2004 when he completely laid out for the grab. Arguably, that game (and goal line stand) initiated the end of the "dark years".
  2. Kyle Carter's grab over the Iowa defender in 2012. Showed that he has great hands when he wants the ball.

And Allen did it twice! Of course, he nearly fumbled away the game in OT, but that's for another time...

chafie fields vs. Miami, 1999.

great catch? No, but great for all the right reasons

Hands down Garrity...the magnitude of the game tips the scales here.

2005 versus Northwestern...

Another catch that was huge and a surprise was the 4th down reception by Isaac Smolko to keep the drive and undefeated season alive at that time. If I remember right he even bobbled it a bit and came down with it just passed the first down marker.

Robinson to Isaac Smolko for 20 yard on 4th & 15 @ Northwestern 2005.

That allowed the Robinson to Derrick Williams game winning 36 yard TD catch on 3rd with 6 to go.

Mills to Tony Johnson vs Michigan in 2002 to set up the game-winning FG.
Oh wait... nvm. :(

That was a great catch. As a Michigan fan I hated it but my wife as a PSU fan loved it. His concentration to bring that catch in was perfect. Add in the time left in the game. Big dagger.

Before I opened the thread I thought of these two(both were mentioned) :
Robinson vs Michigan
Giftopolous picking off Testaverde

Garrity catch in the Sugar Bowl. Great catch on the biggest stage of them all. Not to mention it was the difference in the game giving PSU our first official championship

Hands down: David Daniels versus BYU in Holiday Bowl

There was a catch a couple of years ago- ball kicked off a defender's foot into the hands of a TE (the kid that transferred to F$U I believe). Not very athletic, but it was a quick set of hands and some quick reaction needed at that time.

Engram's grab against OSU is right there Beckham's catch with the best I have ever witnessed. Same type of jawdropper as Beckam's catch was last year.
