Notre Dame to join Big Ten in hockey.

Now they can play the ACC off of the Big Ten, if the situation ever calls for it, moving forward. This can't make the ACC very happy.

Not happy with it. JHU in lacrosse makes sense in lacrosse (especially since women's in now joining) as its their only Div 1 sport. ND should be all or nothing in the conference.

Also, I wonder if this portends Arizona St joining the conference for hockey too -- both joining would be 8 teams and make scheduling easier with an even number of teams.

Move makes sense for both ND and BIG. Travel in other conferences doesn't appeal to ND and BIG needs more teams. Waiting for existing schools to add hockey is tough because it's an expensive addition and new programs would likely further hurt BIG's conference ranking. Pairwise for BIG teams was really bad. I don't think ASU makes sense, but maybe Miami or UNO.

Marriage of convenience for both sides and makes sense. Haven't seen terms of the deal disclosed and what this does to ND's NBCSN deal, but ND struggling to get TV ratings in Hockey East markets.

From the B1G's perspective, I can imagine some of the schools they had hoped to be a little closer to adding hockey may be further away, and 6 teams for a conference with that much exposure potential needs to be expanded.

No B1G in other sports, no hockey. Screw them.

That is emotion speaking.

From the UN-emotional point-of-view, the Notre Dame invite is absolutely the correct move.

I'd like to see us go for North Dakota (yet another UND!!!!) as #8. Hopefully we do not go down the Arizona State path (that's a rumor, that ASU will be #8).

Not a good move. If the big ten is so desperate to add programs then go with Nebraska-Omaha and North Dakota. With the way ND plays off conferences (and says it'll never join the big ten)- let them stay on their own.

So we've added more competition for the automatic tourney bid. Would support this move if it was for all sports, but failing to see the upside here.
More competition for autobid, but also improved schedule strength in conference which means improved chances for at large bid. North Dakota is the best hockey option out there, but I would think Miami or UNO would make more sense.

What the hell is the advantage of having them in? So ND's TV ratings suck in Hockey East:? Sounds like their problem, not ours. Let them join the ACC hockey conference. Or play as an independent.

ND TV ratings may be their problem, but the B1G wanting to expand its hockey league is its own. I really believe if schools like Illinois, Indiana or Nebraska were close at all to making the jump to D1 this would not happen. Perhaps the conference was expecting more movement in that area and it's stalled so they're looking to maximize the situation with a partnership that, at least in the $$$ area, makes good sense.

I'll be curious to see more of the details here.

They're in the ACC for everything else. They're a major independent in football (but they get a guaranteed ACC bowl slot). They're in the B1G for hockey.

What the hell is this? A buffet?

Going in with Notre Dame is like being a vendor to Wal-Mart. There's only one side going to make money off the deal. And it ain't going to be you.

It certainly isn't about TV ratings, but I'm sure they'll boost BIG ratings. They are a brand name, quality program and have CCHA history with 1/2 the conference. BIG hockey is too small. Playing 4 games against conference foes kills RPI/SOS when programs are having down years - like this season.

Not thrilled with the ND addition either but my guess is you're on the right track in regard to ASU. Their timeline currently has them joining a conference for the 2017-2018 season, coincidentally the same year ND is reportedly moving. ASU has made a big commitment and will want to gain as much exposure for their program as possible. Playing historically successful schools like Michigan, Minnesota, MSU, UW and ND along with the large followings of PSU and OSU will accomplish this and help fund raising for the new arena they want. Having a television network in place is a plus as well. I think we'll hear official statements soon now that news has started to get out.

Actually, I like the move.

Now, a PSU kid can knock the sheet out of a ND kid and only get two minutes!

BWAHAHAHAHAH!

:D:D:D:D

Smart move. ND turns on TV sets across the nation, less for hockey, of course, but it makes B1G hockey more salable in BTN's markets. Increases ad rates and sales. Improves strength of schedule and RPI (do they have that in hockey?) for the incumbent six. ND is an opponent the B1G hockey schools will want to play and beat for a number of reasons.

Any notion that ND is going to join a conference in football is a pipe dream for the foreseeable future, especially since ND has returned as an annual Top Ten team. Notre Dame has no incentive to join a conference in football as long as they have their NBC contract, and NBC will give ND a lucrative contract until ND becomes a consistent .500 or worse team. ND is a national brand like no other in college sports, a stubborn fact immune to my irritation.

Wait a minute -- a Notre Dame pedophile priest just committed suicide last week. Shouldn't Delany be taking votes on the best way to curb-stomp the Irish and fleece their pockets? Instead, it seems Jimmy's rewarding Notre Dame for these violations against humanity and enabling future crimes. What kind of message does this send to the victims?

Except Indiana University pulled in more television revenue last year than Notre Dame.

Here are some things to think about:

1.) Notre Dame is being paid comparative garbage on their TV contracts. Roughly $15 million from NBC and roughly $3 million from ESPN through the ACC.

2.) NBC is serious about wanting a piece of the Big Ten's new television contract. Very serious. And NBC owns the current Notre Dame hockey (and of course football) contract.

3.) There is more and more unrest with the ACC schools over their lack of a Conference Network. So much so that some of them are getting wondering eyes.

4.) The ACC's rumored 2017 GOR contingency clause is looking more and more real.

5.) Notre Dame jumping in to save the ACC doesn't do squat for ESPN. They only get an additional 3 Notre Dame football games every two years if the ACC stays at an 8 game schedule.

Take all that for what it is worth.
