Great game to watch, a lot of fun.

  • I was confident going in but never expected to blow their defense off the field. Great game by everyone, no exceptions.
  • What is it about scoring 14 points early? We've done that a lot, like our slow starts in the first half, only opposite.
  • Have to give credit to UM for not folding. That INT changed the momentum and our guys took a quarter to adjust.
  • I never felt threatened, though. I was a little concerned at 14-13, but when we scored before the end up the half, I thought we were in the 80 percentile in terms of win probability.
  • We ALMOST gave up a first quarter score. Not sure why the clocked kept running when their RB went OOB at the two with 20 seconds left in the quarter. I wish they had scored. You can bet tOSU will really want to score in the 1st quarter in the hopes of taking a little wind out of our sails.
Offense
  • This was the Trace McScorely (saw that on a sign) from the second half of last year. I have to say I never saw him bull into defenders like he did to score that TD. That was awesome. Also, that zagged run was a thing of beauty. For the most part, his passes were dead on, especially the long balls.
  • This is where McS really shines: pulling all the stops, feeling the defense in the pocket, stepping up to make plays, etc. This offensive game was McS and I'd give him a game ball.
  • However, if you don't think its all about #26 you are kidding yourself. There was a play, a run for TD by McS, that they showed from the end zone. In that play, 9 fakes the ball to 26 who runs off to the left while 9 keeps and runs between the DE and DT for an easy TD. In the replay, they note that ALL THREE linebackers + the left (D's right) side S followed 26 creating an easy path for 9 as long as he got passed the LOS. I've never seen the entire defensive backfield follow a single player all game as they did last night. #26 is the straw that stirs the drink and 9 was back to being "the wizard".
  • And about Barkley, he's never dropped a pass until last week on a pass underthrown but catchable last week. Last night he dropped a HUGE gainer and almost dropped the ball that put it away. Hope he isn't getting the yips.
  • Also, 26 stumbled on a play that was probably a TD on a short pass when he was wide effing open.
  • Loved the wildcat. I think it gives 26 a quicker mean time to the LOS. That long run, to me reminiscent of Carter's early run in the Rose against Oregon, was still all Barkley. The play was designed to go right and he cut it off to the left after UM over pursued the play.
  • Best time of the night was #88 simply jumping over 9 after he scored a TD. Wow, what athleticism.
  • 88 also had a big night and it was there all day long. He could just out jump anyone in the UM d-backfield.
  • Great to see 5 get some good recognition. He blocked and caught. He secured his place in the NFL draft, IMHO.
  • OL did great considering. As other's pointed out, Gary was a non-factor. There were some moments but, overall, a great game.
Defense
  • Cabinda, Cabinda, Cabinda. Also got GREAT recognition as a player, a motivator and a person. I didn't know he spoke two languages. Wow.
  • Depth for us is a winner. DL played tough, if unspectacular, all night. They stopped the UM power running game.
  • Didn't see a lot of #2. But he also got some good press.
  • I was a little disappointed we didn't get a pick. But we established ourselves as one of the top D's in the B1G as a TEAM.
Michigan
  • You could see Hairball had no clue in the second half. How do you defend that offense when Trace is playing his A game? I have no idea, neither did he.
  • I was impressed with O'Korn. He didn't light it up but stood in there and made some really great throws. I don't like his body language but he's a gamer.
  • UM now has QB problems. While they will bring back a lot of experience, they will have a new QB next season. That is always tough. A lot of their good athletes will go pro after next year.
  • I am not sure that O is contemporary college ball. They look slow and predictable. With the good athletes tOSU and PSU are bringing in, just not gonna cut it.
  • Regardless, I respect their players and program. There was some jawing last night but, overall, a crisp game. I saw the kid flip off the stadium after the game which was bad. I think he realized he made a bad choice.
  • Loved seeing their all world FG kicker miss the Point After. Poetic justice!!!

Misc
  • White out is the best experience in college football. Herbie and team were just effusive.
  • I love Maria...am a little smitten
  • This is the give that keeps on giving...fans, recruits, national attention.
  • LOVED CJF's post game comments thanking ESPN, Game Day, and this being for the community. Dude is a PR magician.
  • speaking of recruits and PR magicians, #2 is just great for the program. His post game dance parties are recruiting gold in that PSU knows how to have fun while being focused and good citizens.
  • I didn't like running a play with six seconds to go. With the icing the kicker, the pitt/akron thing and some other events, rubbing noses in losses. Perhaps that is what recruits want to see these days? Perhaps it was some kind of payback? Perhaps this is what CJF and Moorhead were snickering about late in the game? regardless, it doesn't seem to match our persona and I'd like to hear him explain that thinking.
  • I noticed that the CLE papers started to talk about PSU more than UM. In today's paper, they take some shots at CJF running a play late. They also talk about 26 being a "late bloomer"...WHAT? Regardless, tOSU knows that there is a new player now, it isn't a fluke. Next week is going to be for all the marbles.

I would also give props to the secondary. The only reason O'Korn ran so much is that he had nobody to throw to.

Michigan played a lot of man coverage, that's why Trace looked like Trace from last year throwing balls to where only his guy can catch it. Michigan should have played zone keeping everything in front of them and toughen in the red zone.

Apke is liability in man coverage.

The clock doesn’t stop when a player goes out of bounds, until there’s 2 minutes left in the half.

In general, good play by the O line. Gave McS time to throw and held their own against a lot of pressure.

PSU had 7 sacks last night - DL accounted for 4.5 of those. The outstanding coverage in the secondary helped too.

Great write-up/summary. I also loved CJF thanking game day and the fans...classy. A few misc. observations.

  • I love that Franklin is genuinely excited and engaged with his players after a good play, but he doesn’t yell at anyone, including the refs. He represents very well
  • Shaka continues to impress we he get reps...he’s very disruptive on pass plays
  • I liked how there was no late hits, pushing, cheap shots etc by our team. Classy. Did’t really see any from scUM either outside of the late hit on McScorely, which may have simply been an accident
  • Miles Sanders looks good...he looks better and better every game

#26 a late bloomer? Guess they missed the nearly 200 yards he put up on their #1 ranked Buckeyes as a freshman, all with PSU having virtually no passing game to defend. I understand homer comments but that's just showing the guys stupidity.

When Trace is on, this offense is pretty much unstoppable. And, by "on", I mean not only throwing accurately, but making the right reads. Trace's running was excellent; he showed good moves and determination.

One small observation as I watched Barkley's early TD -- he pulled away from the Michigan defenders like he was Usain Bolt...well, not actually, but he out-distanced the pursuit in a hurry! I think he's a step faster in the open field than he was last year, which was pretty fast to start with.

Regarding depth: It's awesome to see Toney, Simmons, etc. come in during the second half. They simply blow by a tired offensive line.

Toney is going to be quite the player. He has the quickest first step I've seen in a really long time, and that includes being quicker than Aaron Maybin.

two other thoughts:

  • no problem with red zone offense this game. Not sure why, but no problem with red.
  • Neither team tried a FG but we looked solid in our PAT attempts

Trace missed some throws in the first half that he needs to correct. I think he will.

Shelve that short side pitch/option when teams focus on 26. Wide side of the field is a different story. Give 26 space to operate.

Maria. Is. Mine.

Barkley is not a late bloomer. The Cleveland paper is just a late observer.

Re: Out of bounds rule -- clock stops but is started again when the ball is ready for play when we're outside 2:00 to go in each half

As for running one more play, I wasn't bothered by it even though it was unnecessary. But it seemed they wanted to run the same play 8 straight times to see if it would work and they needed that last play to make 8. Franklin understands the chip on the shoulder and while he'll never make direct mention of it, they know. They all know. And really, after all the BS that this school and fanbase have dealt with since 2011, screw everyone. If you don't like it, then stop them. Backups want to score too.

thats interesting because numerous times last night it ran before the ball was NOT set for play

Excellent write up , there is just one thing I would disagree with ...on Barkley's run the left side of our OL just blew the DT and LB'er down toward our bench and the hole was huge...don't think that play was designed to go to the right....very good synopsis tho
