just watched the game replay. Bates went down at 8:14 to go in 3rd Qtr. from that point SB touched the ball 12 times - and 10 of those plays were for negative yardage. one of those positive plays was for 4 yds on 3rd and long deep in PSU territory.

so a Heisman candidate cannot even get positive yards when it mattered the most. the OFF is going to need to come up with a solution for the OL without Bates. other teams will be able to do the same thing to us with the OL in its current situation. put another way = if Bates does not go down, then i think we win the game.

Barkley didn't have much success running before Bates went down save his one huge run (which was run to the left side) for a TD. But, you'd rather take your chances with Bates in there for sure - who knows; may have been the difference.

The problem with the RPO is the offensive linemen basically zone block. These guys need to learn to fire off the line and drive the DL back. Just the opposite is happening. They run the RPO and the defensive linemen and LBers are penetrating the backfield and waiting for Barkley. We need a lot more screens, shovel passes, etc. to stop the insanity.

Yeah, it seemed like there was nothing to read other than we're (SB/TM) surrounded so which one of us takes the loss.

I don't understand why they don't have designed run plays from the same formation. The DL goes to the exchange point knowing they'll stand there for a second or two. Would be good to see a quick handoff and take a chance Barkley gets past the DL.

After Bates went down, our LT was moved to LG. Our RT was moved to LT. And the 2nd team RT played the rest of the day. Mahon is a better tackle than guard. Fries is a red shirt freshman who had only started a couple of games in his career and never played LT. And Wright was still recovering from an ankle injury.

Lack of depth killed us. Losing John Reid, Torrence Brown and not having Andrew Nelson at 100% finally caught up with us.

1) show me a clip of PSU zone blocking
2) very few if any teams in college or pro 'fire out' off the ball. I dont know how they coach them at PSU, but for the most part, modern OL coaching does not including 'firing out' like they did in the 60's, 70's etc. Save the brain, save the game.

Maybe Moorhead should have called something besides a RPO SB run to the left after 11........................TFL. What happened to the play calling against Mich? Did Moorhead have a brain fart and said to himself.........go back to Plan A? Can someone chime in on how well it worded out to punt from inside the OSU 45 yard line at the end of the game.

After Bates went out, didn't Mahon slide from LT to LG? And Fries to LT from RT? And Wright played RT?
no when Bates the LT went out, 71, played LT, 74 stayed at LG, 66 OC, 70 (Mahon) was the RG and 77 came in to play RT.
earlier in the year, 71 played LG (Indiana?) while 74 went to RG when 70 did not play.

The program needs a couple more top 10 recruiting classes to be able to plug and play on the O and D lines when injuries happen without a major drop off in talent and ability. That is the difference at this point between PSU and the osu's, bama's etc. A couple more years and this team will be there.

Agree. Our skill players match up with most teams. Our lines are miles behind the Alabama's.

I was screaming at the TV to go for it. Didn’t help.

Agreed, although somehow the coaches cobbled together lines that kept working last year. Was an amazing job they did. And with all our belly aching, we barely missed the CFP last year with a loss to Pitt AND a whopping by UM.

Bates isn't good enough to make that statement...he has struggled this yr as all of our lineman have. I think losing Buchholz was worse.

He's good enough though that his going out effected 2 different positions and forced a still gimpy Chasz wright back on the field.
Don't discount his going out.
Yes losing Buchholz was equally as bad.
