Most of you will learn several things you didn't know about Jered from this article.

What a great team culture Cael and his staff has cultivated.

I do not know the rules regarding intra-conference transfers but I do like that Conway gets to finish his career on the mat while Cortez is waiting. It rewards another grounded young man, Conway, who has taken the Penn State opportunity and worked very hard to hopefully become a 2x AA. If Cortez was eligible right away and beat Conway for the 133 spot, I would understand but I think this allows the best of both situations.

I suspect Cortez has a Nolf/Nickal like impact next year after a year in that room. Sounds like he can't wait to get his chance.

Does anyone no any inside information on why Jered had to sit out this year, while I thought I read another Northwestern wrestler was allowed to compete this year after transferring to Big school, unless I am mistaken?

The prior B1G rules were that you could transfer with the conference, but if you did so you could not receive a scholarship from the 2nd conference school. Before the 2011-12 season, the B1G changed that rule, so that if an athlete transferred within the conference they could receive an athletic scholarship. However, to balance this the conference added a transfer penalty so that an athlete lost a year of eligibility after the transfer.

The actual language of the Intraconference Transfer Rules are below. They also spell out how an athlete can transfer within the B1G and not lose a year of eligibility.

1. Pre-Matriculation. A prospective student-athlete who has signed a tender from a Conference institution and has not yet triggered transfer status per NCAA Bylaw 14.5.2 (conditions affecting transfer status), is subject to the following intraconference transfer requirements:

a. Signed National Letter of Intent. A prospective student-athlete who signs a valid National Letter of Intent (NLI) with a Conference institution but subsequently enrolls at an alternate Big Ten institution shall be required to complete one (1) full year of residence at the alternate (i.e., certifying) Big Ten institution and shall be charged with the loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports. These penalties shall be applied regardless of any decision made by the NLI Steering Committee on behalf of the prospective student-athlete.

1. Exception - Complete Release by Signing Institution. If the Big Ten institution at which the prospective student-athlete originally signed the NLI grants a "Complete Release" from the NLI, the prospect shall be permitted to enroll at any other Conference institution without penalty.

2. Exception - NLI Declared Null and Void. Should the NLI become null and void prior to the prospective student-athlete's matriculation, the prospective student-athlete shall be free to enroll at any other Conference institution without penalty.

b. Signed Tender without National Letter of Intent. A prospective student-athlete that signs a valid tender with a Conference institution but subsequently enrolls at an alternate Big Ten institution shall be required to complete one (1) full academic year of residence at the alternate (i.e., certifying) Big Ten institution and shall be charged with the loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports. Upon mutual agreement of the two involved Conference institutions, this penalty shall be waived by the Chair of the Academics and Eligibility Subcommittee.

2. Post Matriculation. A student-athlete that has signed a tender from a Conference institution and has triggered transfer status per NCAA Bylaw 14.5.2 (conditions affecting transfer status), may not represent an alternate Big Ten institution in intercollegiate athletics competition until the individual has completed one (1) full academic year of residence at the alternate (i.e., certifying) Big Ten institution and shall be charged with the loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports.

3. Pre- and Post-Matriculation Exceptions

a. Cancellation of Tender Due to Inadmissibility. When a prospective student-athlete is inadmissible to the institution for which a tender has been accepted, the tender shall be considered null and void and the intraconference transfer penalty does not apply.

b. Dropped Sport. When a Conference institution drops the student-athlete's sport in which the student-athlete has participated, the intraconference penalty does not apply.

I really enjoy the grounded type of kids Cael looks for to join his program.

Micic is sitting out this year at Michigan.

Thanks, but I thought I read where one of the transferring Northwestern wrestlers petitioned the Big to not loose a year of eligibility and it was granted. Maybe it fell into one of the exceptions Tom listed above.
IIRC, it was the other way around: shortly after Micic left, Iowa backup 125 Philip Laux transferred to NW and applied for immediate eligibility. Not sure if that was granted, and his application doesn't matter now because Laux left NW about a week after arriving.

Our Iowa friends will remember this more clearly.

Per a Michigan University article....

Micic is currently training with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club while using an Olympic redshirt for 2015-16. A two-time freestyle world team member, he most recently captured bronze at 57kg at the 2015 Junior World Championships. The Big Ten Conference has approved his transfer waiver; he will have four years of eligibility remaining when he returns to collegiate competition next year.

Thanks for the catch. I should've trusted Google over my memory.
