Official women's Field Hockey Quarterfinal thread.

Mrs. Fair never played FH?

She did, briefly, but hated it. She more into cheerleading. So was I.:) Well not cheerleading exactly. I was into cheerleaders. No, not in that way. I just loved watching them.

And as I type this our ladies have scored. 1-0 with 12:36 left in 1st (not sure if that is half, quarter, or eighth). Probably quarter?

damn, Iowa ties it up on a nice deflection. It's 1-1, with just over 24 minutes left

damn, Iowa scores off a penalty corner in the 2nd OT, and advances to the B1G semis. Final, 3-2, Iowa.

Look at the bright side, your long string of incorrect predictions is intact. What's the count up to now?
Please pick Michigan to win next week.

No. I think it ended yesterday when I posted this in the official game thread. We trailed at the time.
"Ok. We will score a touchdown on this drive and go on to win. Trust me. I know stuff.:)"
We did score a TD on that drive.
Then, when the score was tied, I posted this.
"OK. Here's the deal. I'm headed to a party and will miss the rest of the game. We're tied but I leave you with Gambit's Guarantee. Penn State will win this game. Like I said. I know stuff.:)"

Of course, I was right both times. I think I broke the jinx on football and transferred it to field hockey. I can live with that.:)

I know nothing about women's field hockey but that was painful to watch. Goals hit higher than 18" don't count? Don't understand some of the fouls. Aren't they allowed to tough sticks or hit the ball with the back of their stick?

Regardless PSU was totally outplayed in the second half. They couldn't control the ball and had trouble getting it over mid field.

I believe the 18" rule is only on goals shot during penalty corners, where the first shot is a hit

Aren't they allowed to tough sticks or hit the ball with the back of their stick?

- it is illegal to hit the ball with the rounded side of the stick (the back of the stick)
- players are not allowed to hit, hook, hold or interfere with an opponent's stick

The biggest difference between FH and most other sports is the obstruction rule. In most sports, a defender or an offensive player is allowed to shield a ball, usually with the shielder's body, to prevent the other player from getting to it. In FH, shielding is illegal.

Regardless PSU was totally outplayed in the second half. They couldn't control the ball and had trouble getting it over mid field.

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. PSU seemed to possess the ball more frequently in the 1st half, but it was a tight game, and PSU was only up 1-0 at the half. Iowa played better, offensively, in the 2nd half, and scored 2 times. PSU didn't do that badly in the 2nd half, and they got the equalizing goal in the last two minutes.

PSU had stretches where they dominated in OT, but they couldn't get a goal. A PSU player was called for obstruction in the 2nd OT, and Iowa scored on a penalty corner on the play. (That was a tough call, in that the PSU defender made a nice play to disrupt the Iowa player near PSU's goal, but she fell at the end of the play and banged into the Iowa player, and that's why she was called for the obstruction.)

I didn't see the first half but I heard that PSU had the upper hand. PSU was clearly outplayed in the second half from my point of view.

IMO the rules are funky. It seems that most of the scoring is on penalty corners.

i hear his girlfriend is a good player

Was. She graduated. That said, her sister is an even better player and she is still on the team - just a junior.

FTR - Trace was at the game. Good news was that he wasn't on crutches. Bad news is that he was definitely favoring the leg a bit. .

As a FYI, PSU played earlier today in the opening round of NCAAs. They faced Harvard, at Princeton. Unfortunately for PSU, they fell to Harvard, 6-1. That is the most goals that PSU had given up in any game, win or loss, this season. They gave up 4 to Duke early in the season, gave up 3 to Iowa in a 3-2 loss, gave up 3 to NW in a 4-3 PSU win, and gave up 3 to Iowa in a 3-2 OT loss in the B1G tourney.

This team finished the season with a 12-6 record. They were pretty talented, which makes their record, and the early exit from NCAAs, a disappointment.
