Junior linebacker Brandon Bell was up first on the teleconference lineup to kick off San Diego State week this morning. Bell discussed a variety of topics, including true freshmen Saquon Barkley and John Reid, playing alongside Jason Cabinda and Troy Reeder and SDSU running back Donnel Humphrey. He also provided a quick update on Nyeem Wartman-White and what he's been doing to help the team since his injury.

First impression of Saquon Barkley...

“One of the first times (meeting him) was in the summer before the pads went on, just going out there and doing seven-on-seven. You could tell he was an eager kid. He wanted to go against the best linebackers, the best safeties in the one-on-ones. You could just tell he was really eager from the time he stepped on campus.”

On playing alongside Jason Cabinda and Troy Reeder…

“It didn’t (take long to adjust.) Jason moved over to the Mike position pretty smooth under certain circumstances. It’s been going well so far. I love playing next to both those guys. They bring high energy and they’re running around. That’s the way I like to play, so it’s worked out just fine.”

On his personal comfort with the defense…

“Definitely way more comfortable, second year in a system. I know my role, I know my responsibilities and my assignments. Come Saturdays I try to fly around and play fast.”

How a successful punter affects a defense…

“It benefits us greatly. It flips the field on the opposing offense. It’s just complementary football. When they’re starting on their 18 on average or they’re 16-yard line in front of the crowd, it’s very beneficial.”

On limiting Rutgers to less than 50 yards rushing…

“I think we just played physical. When it comes to stopping the run, it’s a mentality and it's a mindset, just try to hit the opposing team on the other side of the ball on their side of the line of scrimmage.”

On playing as a true freshman in 2013…

“I think it helped me tremendously. The way I see it you can’t get experience any other way. I got thrown out on a flyer, I got some great experience my freshman year and it helped my confidence going into the later years.”

On Nyeem Wartman-White’s recent involvement with the team…

“He’s in every meeting, helping out Troy and Jason, being that he played both Mike and Will the last two years. He’s still a very vocal guy. Anybody can come up to him and he’ll help anyone out with anything, really.”

On San Diego State’s running back Donnel Humphrey…

“Yes, I watched a little bit (of film) yesterday. He seems like a very electrifying back. He had like 1,800 yards last year, so he seems like a good guy.”

First impressions of John Reid…

“I didn’t really know him that well. He’s a quiet kid, but from what I observed he was just in his playbook from before he got here. Then when he got here he’s been all business. That’s kind of why he’s quiet. He just puts his nose down and works hard.”

On what the defense can improve upon…

“We could definitely tackle better and just continue to reinforce communicating.”
