May 1, 1974 - Dock Ellis intentionally hit the first 3 Reds (Rose, Morgan, Driessen) with a pitch, walked Tony Perez on 4 inside pitches trying to hit him, and then threw 2 pitches at Johnny Bench's head, before being taken out of the game.

Speaking of pitchers, 2 time Cy Young winner Cory Kluber broke his pitching arm last night on a line drive back to the mound. He' probably be out most of the season, perhaps to return in September. Ouch.

I got to meet Dock at Doubleday Farm baseball in Perry county a few years before he passed away. He became a drug counselor after baseball. He was a really nice man. He was my favorite of the players that I've met.

I looked it up and the Pirates lost the game 5-3. That's pretty good bullpen work. The Pirates bullpen gave up 4 runs in 9 innings despite coming in with the bases loaded and 0 out in the 1st inning with a 2-0 count to Johnny Bench.
