One of Tom Osborne's favorites in the news.

Phillips is definitely a HUGE stain on Osborne's legacy

Gotta win that National Championship in 1995. Phillips was a proven bad guy, but Osborne looked the other way. It was a "football first" culture at UNL in 1995.

While everyone wants to give Roger Godell a hard time during his tenure as NFL commissioner. Paul Tagliabue did absolutely nothing and let numerous criminals to continue to play in the NFL, during his tenure.

This almost deserves a visit to the Nebraska board. It is one of the more sanctimonious when it comes judging Penn State. D-bags.

Had forgotten he was 6th overall pick in 1996 draft

he was picked ahead of plenty of good players; from PSU, Jeff Hartings and Andre Johnson went in the 1st round, and Bobby Engram in the 2nd

1996 draft

Let the nebraska board alone. I know they can rival iowa fans in terms of obnoxiousness at times but it's just not worth it. No good will come of it.

Well, Lavon Chisley and Gyasi Cline-Heard say hello.

I would not be talking smack on anybody's board.

That said, Nebraska fans are without question the king of the douchebags. Sanctimonious is putting it kindly. I really hate those effs.

FWIW, Lavon Chisley was booted from the program. Although we didn't understand why at the time, turns out that was the right call (with the benefit of hindsight, of course).

Neb board isn't worth the time or effort. Don't need to give those idiots

something to feed on. Thankfully they congregate to that board like maggots.

Not to worry -- MichNittLion is on it! Re: Neb board isn't worth the time.

JoePa has a stain on his legacy. Deservedly so.

But you're the one who throws in the "Ped State" comment. So if you want to go down that route, don't get insulted when a Penn Stater chimes to say the truth you don't like to hear: CORNHUSKER SHIT stinks too.

Osborne played Phillips in 1995 because it was FOOTBALL FIRST at Nebraska in 1995. Shame on Dr. Tom for that, and just as JoePa deserves the stain on his legacy, Dr. Tom deserves the stain on his.

But I know, "Ped State", ha ha ha. Screw you. BOTH our programs have stains in the past, at least I admit it.

The Rams traded Jerome Bettis to the Steelers after picking Phillips

"The Rams selected the Nebraska tailback Phillips with the sixth overall pick, and then they traded bruising third-year back Bettis and a third-round selection to the Steelers for a second-rounder that year and a fourth-round pick in 1997. The Steelers used that third-round pick to take Arkansas linebacker Steven Conley, while the Rams selected Washington tight end Ernie Conwell in the second round and TCU guard Ryan Tucker in the fourth round the next year."

Probably not the best trade the Rams ever made. Possibly THE best trade the Steelers ever made.

something makes me want to drag that Husker fan down the stairs

By his hair (or his high fructose corn syrup enhanced jowls) - not sure why I have that urge.

Exactly, JVP didn't try to keep Chisley.

He got rid of him. Osborne needed a stud rb. He lobbied to keep Phillips in the program after he threw a teammate's girlfriend down the steps and beat the hell out of her. Scott Frost was the teammate and the girl was Phillips ex. Don't sound like two similiar things to me at all.

Re: Had forgotten he was 6th overall pick in 1996 draft

If I remember correctly, it was the Phillips pick by the Rams that allowed them to trade Jerome Bettis to the Steelers for what I also remember was a third round pick.

At the time, I thought Bettis fit the Steeler RB mold and that he would have good yardage production with the Steelers, but not as good or as long as he did have. I remember picking up a handful of Bettis football cards at a flea market just after the Steelers got him.

As an aside, I almost went to the Penn State game a Notre Dame when Bettis ran wild in the snow. Even with the loss, I wish I had gone. My decision may have been affected by the prior 2 games I went to at Notre Dame. The first, was with USC and Rodney Peete the year before Notre Dame was the national championship. That day neither Notre Dame with Tim Brown or USC seemed to want to win the game. Our party of 4 was able to flip 2 tickets for 4 and $20, started off by selling our initial 2 to a USC fan accompanying a young blonde wearing a white fur coat (it was one of those cool, rainy October days). The other was against Pitt (1989-90) who exchanged TD drives with Rocket Ismail's Notre Dame before Pitt collapsed. Pitt had a QB who reminded me of Zack Mills a little-I think he had a fairly long career in the NFL as a backup.
It didn't help I had the 'worst seat in the stadium', a folding chair behind the last row of bleacher seats directly behind the goal post. I was confused when the letters marked on the steps ended just before the letter on my ticket. I thought I might have a fake ticket. The usher pointed the seat out to me. Earlier in the day, I watched the Penn State game (maybe against Alabama) in one of the 2 bars near the stadium (not Linebackers, it kind of reminded me of the Skeller). At that time of the day, there were only a handful of people in the bar. When the Penn State game started, I heard a "F*ck Penn State" in a Philly accent from the other side of the bar. When I asked the man why he was rooting against Penn State, he said he had a $50 bet with his brother.Still good memories.

Re: Well, Lavon Chisley and Gyasi Cline-Heard say hello.

I thought it was pretty well-established that Chisley was removed from the team because of grades, not anything behaviorally. I can't recall anything in Chisley's past that would have been a red flag for what he ended up doing. Players are removed for grades regularly, and very few of them go on to commit murder - I don't think it was a situation as you describe where Paterno saw something that we didn't with regards to Chisley's violent nature and acted based on that.

Don't throw stones, anyone remember Lavon Chisley (sp)?

This "only look one way" attitude is one reason why we PSU get funny looks sometimes.

Re: Well, Lavon Chisley and Gyasi Cline-Heard say hello.

From what I remember Chisley failed some classes over the summer, was ineligible for the fall, hired an agent, either borrowed or owed some people money (thinking he would be drafted or at least signed), and things spiraled when he was not signed.

I am not sure what indications were there while he was a player other than being very up and down. I remember one game where he intercepted or batted down several balls and was very dominating.

I believe LJ Sr and his daughter (who dated Lavon) were character witnesses for Lavon. I would think LJ Sr would have given Lavon the character twice over before letting him date his daughter.
