One space or two spaces after a period in a sentence?

So I literally just found out last week that the norm (and I guess official proper way) is one space after a period at the end of sentence. Google said that two spaces was used when typewriters were in use to allow enough room between sentences as typewriter spacing was not always uniform. Where as when on a computer, that is not true therefore two spaces no longer required.

Am I the only person that did not know this (I will date myself and say i learned on a typewriter and still use two spaces).

I learned it as 2 spaces as well. It was only recently that I found out the accepted practice is now 1 space. I still use 2.

To facilitate cognition, 2 spaces is best.

The APA manual required two spaces when I was in grad school (2002 - 2006). I had professors who would grade on correct APA style as well as content.

I am old school and always used two. Learned that from my high school business typing class. But I think that one is now accepted usage.

I'm with you...it's two spaces and it always will be. It's five spaces for a tab indent. I hate right justify b/c it renders spacing random. Microsoft's default font, Calibri, is an affront to God and man (Arial and Times New Roman only).

Get off my lawn, kids!

Baby Boomer = TWO spaces

Millennial = ONE space

That's the difference.

Because we are trapped in a time loop, here's what we said when we had this exact same discussion in 2018....

I'm just glad when people use capital letters and punctuation to delineate a sentence. Otherwise, it's unreadable.

I use 2 spaces.

I learned the hard way from the young girls at work who politely pointed it out to me. We had this discussion a year ago. I even text that way which they found more amusing.

Interesting you post this question. If you look at the president's tweets they are single spaced which has always indicated to me he has a staff member, likely 40 or under, type the tweet. So why then the Grammer and spelling mistakes?

I found out it was 1 space after editing my daughter's grad school apps. Who knew?

Because grad school apps are limited in space/characters, we were constantly economizing to find more space.
I spent a few years working in the outplacement industry and have probably helped with 2,000 resumes. That was a one space world. Space was critical when trying to prevent a line from running over. Grad school was a two space world.

To make it seem like Trump actually typed it.

It depends on the font actually. Most new fonts correct the spacing so it’s only one space. Most word processors will correct it so it doesn’t matter. Old fonts like courier need the double space.

On your phone Just double click the space bar and you’re all set.

I learned on typewriters and did two spaces until just a few years ago... a friend my age then pointed out that the two spaces just make us look old now.
