I cut cable a loooong time ago and am interested in watching games through a legit streaming service this year. Anybody have experience with, semi-informed opinions about, or even completely uninformed, unhinged, angry rants about Youtube TV, Directv NOW, or some other streaming service that'll give me BTN and all the other networks/channels on which PSU is likely to appear this season?

If it matters I have an LG OLED smart tv and an internet hookup that streams Netflix and other feeds just fine.

I switched from Sling to Direct TV Now, because with Direct Tv Now herein the DC Metro area, I would get all the local channels, BTN, FS1, and the ESPN channels to be able to watch the PSU games no matter what channel they are on.

So far I like Direct TV Now, still getting used to their on demand stuff which seems more difficult than Sling's. But it has BTN which is why I made the switch.

How easy and fast is it to switch channels? For me, Sling wasn't real slow but it was slow enough to annoy me. And the games would lag. The game on TV would be at the end of the 3rd quarter, say, and you'd look on the computer and the game was actually five minutes into the 4th quarter.

I no longer have Sling but now I have a deal with Spectrum where I get channels over the Internet but it is super slow to change channels. If you decide you want to go from Game X to Game Y it literally takes 10-15 seconds and even then after it comes on the bottom third of your screen is taken up by a big banner telling you what you just switched to and it takes several seconds for the banner to go away.

Whatever faults pre-digital cable had, you could switch back and forth between games immediately. If there's a way to do that today I don't know what it is.

Haven't looked at Sling or Hulu. Both DirecTV NOW and Youtube TV carry BTN as well as the E-sports channels and local broadcast channels for about the same price.

I went from Direct Tv to Direct Tv Now, basically all the same channels at half the price and I'm enjoying it so far. Plus it comes in higher resolution than what I was getting from regular Direct Tv. Bought a Roku Ultra from Amazon and upped my internet speed through Comcast and all is well. Also I tried Playstation Vue and it was okay, however I liked the Direct Tv Now interface better and stuck with them. Can't go wrong either way though.

I haven't had 10-15 seconds load time but at times I have notice it takes longer than preferred to load. I have never been 5 minutes behind in a game. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but when we cut the cable we "upped" our internet speed to the medium level. I figured if we are cutting cable and doing video streaming then I want to up the speed. Maybe if I upped it to the highest level it would be even better.

I can't begin to tell you what the download speed or router technical stuff is, as I am tech savvy but not tech geeky. I just know that I moved up from basic to the next speed level.

I'm considering ordering Playstation Vue because I heard it has the Big Ten Overflow Channels.

Does anyone have experience?

I'd hate to order a service with BTN and with the PSU game playing on a BTN overflow channel that is not available on Youtube Tv or Hulu TV

Highly unlikely that a PSU game is ever going to be on a BTN overflow channel.

Right now $10 a month for 3 months then $40 per month. You can sign up at an att store or I guess online. The $10 special may only be at an att store and if you have att wireless.

Not sure about that part.

I signed up a month ago online and got the $10/mo special. Awesome deal.

However, the $40 package does not include BTN. Also, the home eagles pre season games were blacked out on Fox43 when streaming it through DTV Now. I assume that may happen in regular season too, but really don’t know.

Depends where you live. The local school will take the primary channel and push PSU to overflow. But are there often two games at the same time on the network?

Vue had the overflow channels 12 months ago when I was a customer.

Yup, this is correct. And it also depends on what the streaming service considers local. So a Service based in California may not consider a game in Pennsylvania local. And could overflow a PSU game.

I live in Ventura County, CA. Cut cable in January this year. Subscribe to You Tube TV. So far very satisfied. $35/ month. I get BTN, all Fox and CBS sports channels and ESPN.

Are there DVR options for these streaming services? I record a ton to watch later. How does that work?

I feel like I should get a finders fee from Direct tv Now.

So with Direct TV Now you can record shows that have new episodes each week as well as movies. Still assessing the quality of the playback and if there’s any quality lapse with a lot of stored content.

Looking for live TV Hulu steams very well for me and my internet speed is extremely slow too. I had direct TV now Wich was nice because can sign in on tv channel apps like BTN but it's more money and live TV streaming was terrible.

I just got rid of Comcast last week and went with Hulu live. So far so good. Watched the Steelers preseason game this weekend and no hiccups.

It’s a shame there hasn’t been dozens of threads about this recently. If it was only possible to search, we’d really have something here.

Or perhaps if there was a way to stick threads that come up over and over to the top of the board we could have one spot where people could go to access the information. And we could even add new information as plans change their offerings and options over time. Too bad we don't have that capability on a message board in 2018.

Those are reserved for things no one reads....like BWI subscription pleas and stories about Paterno.

Here ya go Spect..

Does PlayStation Vue have DVR service? It’s a perfectly normal question if you’re a new PS Vue subscriber, or someone thinking of becoming one. Knowing whether or not PlayStation Vue has a DVR and how to record PlayStation Vue could be the difference between signing up to PS Vue or not. This makes perfect sense when you consider the fact that most live streaming services have some type of DVR option. So, does PlayStation Vue have DVR? The answer is yes! If you want to learn how to use the DVR for PlayStation Vue, just stick around because that’s what this article is all about!

PlayStation Vue DVR – The Details
You need to know how to record PlayStation Vue. It’s simple, really. When you add shows to “My Shows” they are automatically set for recording and each recording will be saved for up to 28-days. Even if you want to binge-watch shows, this will give you access to at least three shows per series before episodes would begin to be erased. This won’t matter for many shows, because some of them offer multiple episodes on-demand, so you will have access there, as well. With the exception of CBS shows, you can watch any recordings through your home or out-of-home networks. CBS can only be watched at home.

Some channels won’t be able to be recorded on the DVR for PlayStation Vue. These include HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax, but these channels all offer complete DVRs so you don’t need to DVR them anyway. On-demand channels Hi-Yah!, Impacy, and Machinima are on-demand so DVR is not required and cannot be used, since they are on-demand channels and not live stream. Also, while some CBS programs/networks can be recorded in some areas, in others they cannot. It really just depends on the specific network that you have access to.

PlayStation Vue DVR – Recording
If you want to add shows to PlayStation Vue’s DVR it has to be added to the My Shows section. This can be done multiple ways, depending on the device you’re using. On most devices, you can add shows to the PlayStation Vue DVR My Channels section by either highlighting the show and pressing R1 or by selecting the + icon.

Most devices, PS3/PS4, Roku, Chromecast, iOS, Amazon Fire TV, and others have access to the PlayStation Vue DVR. All of the devices should play in your home-network with no problem.

PlayStation Vue DVR – Space
The nicest thing about PlayStation Vue is that there are no limitations in regards to space. While some DVRs do limit the amount of space you have, PlayStation Vue isn’t one of them. You could record an entire series, during a marathon, and it would be available to you, for at least, 28-days.
PlayStation Vue DVR – Pricing
The PlayStation Vue DVR comes with the package that you sign up for. No matter which of the four packages you pick, all of them contain access to the DVR. The smallest package has 45 channels and is available for $30/month. This is the package most people start with, so if you’re looking for a low-cost option that would be it. If you want to learn more about PS Vue, our PS Vue review can fill you in on features and added extras. There’s also a 5-day free trial that will help you learn more!

The DVR service is cloud based, so it always records whatever you select to add to “My Shows” regardless of the device being on.

What is even more interesting, as I discovered after cancelling and coming back to the service recently, is that it records shows even while you service is cancelled. It keeps your profile alive even if you cancel the service. I found it having recorded multiple episodes of shows that aired when I did not have access to the service.

I would say this is one of the best executed versions of a DVR on any of the streaming services. My only complaint is how fast forwarding content works and this is very device dependent. On a PlayStation and Apple TV it is great and works like you would expect a hard drive receiver DVR to work. On a Fire TV it is sluggish, on a Roku you cannot see where you are in the show while fast forwarding, so it is guess work. Sling TV has a much better way of handling fast forwarding of DVR content which is universal across all the devices I have used.

The PS Vue features a cloud DVR. It is not a typical DVR with a hard drive. None of the shows you tell it to record end up on your device.

Instead, think of it more like stream on demand. You tell it the show you want to “record”, it remembers it, then when you click it to watch, it brings it up and plays it.

In other words, your device could be sunk at the bottom of the ocean and it would still “record” your programs if you want to call it that. Doesn't matter if it's on, off, or rested at all. As long as you have a device to watch them on after you have told the cloud system what show to keep available for on demand viewing, the shows will be available for you to watch.

I live in Ventura County, CA. Cut cable in January this year. Subscribe to You Tube TV. So far very satisfied. $35/ month. I get BTN, all Fox and CBS sports channels and ESPN.
But you can't get HBO. I just subscribed to Hulu, which DOES carry HBO, along with BTN and a host of other channels. Navigability is completely different with Hulu and YouTubeTV. No proprietary clicker, as with Comcast. No channel numbers; instead, you have channels grouped topically (e.g., news, sports, movies, etc.). No "last channel" or "back" button. But you can use your Iphone as a clicker, and watch live what is on each channel that you are considering selecting. (Helps avoid commercials.)

You can get HBO through HBO Now, a standalone way to subscribe to the channel.

Keep in mind, virtually all these streaming services will give you a free week or month to try them out. Take advantage of that. You have to give your credit card and then cancel before the trial period is up.

But if you work it right, you can probably watch most of the PSU games for free by just taking advantage of the free trials.

Get an HD Antenna for about $30 and assuming you live in LA you'll get about 80+ channels including the major networks like ABC, NBC, Fox, etc.

Get BTN PLus for about $80 year.

Figure something else out for ESPN...probably the local the bar for those couple of games.

You are correct. Not sure how I missed that one.

Ok, get a Sling box and hook it up in your parents, sisters, brothers, or friends house that has the BTN and ESPN. Sign in and view from your location any channel they get...and it's free after you purchase the slingbox and a splitter, which run about $120 total.

Looking at slingbox as you brought it up - they don't seem to have a coax input for a cable coming from a coax splitter - only hdmi/component cable jacks. Therefore you'd need to have said friend/family purchase an additional cable box, at $6-$20 per month depending on provider, to feed your ability to watch tv from your laptop.
