4 and 2 years old. What should we do? Any good/famous family friendly restaurants for dinner or breakfast the next morning? Will be staying in the Mount Vernon area. Thanks!

Aquarium and Science Center is great with kids although they might be too young for the Science Center. They might like the Port Discovery Children's Museum better. All the restaurants in the Inner Harbor are mainly family friendly.

that's a tough age for traveling. but Charm City is a great city.

Any good/famous family friendly restaurants for dinner or breakfast the next morning?

For kids that age, I'd suggest the Papermoon Diner. It's great for kids of all ages. It's located at 227 West 29th Street, Baltimore. You can learn more about it on their web site:

What should we do?

again, it's tough to plan an active day with kids that age. Some suggestions:

1. Port Discovery Children's Museum (35 Market Place, Baltimore)
CLICK HERE for their web site

2. Walters Art Museum (600 N. Charles Street, Baltimore)
yeah, what kind of dumb parent takes young kids to an art museum? However, there are 2 things that work well for you here, 1) it's free, 2) they specifically have events for kids. CLICK HERE to learn more

3. Fort McHenry. It involves some degree of walking, so be prepared. That said, it's a nice view, and the kids might (no guarantees) enjoy it.

4. National Aquarium. It's located on the Inner Harbor. It's kind of expensive, and they don't allow strollers. (If you have a stroller, they let you store them there, and give you a front or back carrier to hold your child). It's one of the better aquariums, and they have some nice things kids are able to touch

5. Pedal Boats. Another attraction in the Inner Harbor. If the weather is nice, and the kids are tired of walking, it might be fun to go out on the pedal boats. Some of them are shaped like sea monsters.

That's a start.

have fun

Stay safe. I suggest a hotel room several stories up.

With children that age I'd suggest the Baltimore Zoo. It's a nice Zoo. Also, if you venture into Inner Harbor take the water taxi around the harbor and if the little ones are ok take the water taxi over to Fort McHenry.

If your hotel has a pool that's all they'll need for night time entertainment. Oh, if you have one I'd bring two strollers or a side-by-side so that the little ones don't have all that much walking.

Knew that was coming. Unfortunately, we need to travel there for my daughter's care since the vaunted UPMC children's isn't doing enough to help her.
Damn.

I live forty minutes away, so I know Baltimore semi-well. It's safe around the Inner Harbor. Tom did a good job in summarizing the kid-friendly Baltimore; you're very near Port Discovery. I haven't been there in years so I don't know how well it's held up but I would bring my kids there once or twice a year. Little Italy is nice for restaurants, especially if your kids like pasta. Try Amicci's, very nice.

Thanks for the good suggestions. The kids are completely crazy at this point, but they did manage a round trip flight to lax so anything is possible I guess!

Just like someone mentioned, the Aquarium & the Science Center are very kid friendly. As for family restaurants, Little Italy has many which are kid friendly, and not far from the Inner Harbor. For your sweet tooth, try Vaccaro's for great Italian desserts.

Aquarium is fantastic and worth the time and money. The children's 'museum' is more like a giant indoor playground with rooms that have books and other toys. It's a germaphobe's nightmare. My daughter liked it because she was 2 at the time and playing is always fun, but I couldn't recommend it.

I live inner city Baltimore. Adjacent to Mt Vernon. My kids grew up here. Great city, Mt Vernon is generally safe. You are a quick cab ride to the inner Harbor. The Aquarium is a must. While your there take the water taxi across the Harbor to the Sciece Center or just take the ride and then take a walk. If you are looking for a more historic experience the B&O railroad museum and roundhouse is a must. Ft McHenrey is a great historic sight a short drive from the Harbor. My Vernon, the inner Harbor, Fells Point, The Federal Hill park are all a walk or water taxi ride from the aquarium. You will be welcome in our city.

In that case, I recommend CHOP.

Chop didn't really work out as clinic hours made things logistically difficult. Johns Hopkins has been more accommodating.

Also, her condition is extremely rare and it is difficult to find a team with the right experience to fully understand and treat her. Hopkins has an institute dealing with her family of disorders. There is actually only one place where there is a focus on what she has, but its the University or Colorado. It's just not practical at this point as she is not in dire circumstances. She is healthy as long as she has the correct regimen of medicine and diet. Numbers wise she is not doing as well as she could be, so we need to try other avenues to make sure she stays healthy.

Thanks everyone.

I think we will definitely try the aquarium and maybe a water taxi.

As far as food goes are there any iconic type places in Baltimore (think primantis in Pittsburgh or cheese steaks in Philly)?

G&M for crabcakes I would say. But it's a little outside the city. It's kid friendly though.

I can't think of any specific "go to" place for crabs but that's the other main Baltimore specific food.

I guess Maryland Crab Soup would be another local staple.

BEST BREAKFAST without a doubt:

Blue Moon Cafe

Kids will love the captain crunch French toast. If you go there, get there early or go on off-peak hours. The place is small and can get crowded. There's a blue moon too cafe in federal hill as well, but it's not quite as good as the original.

For kid friendly crabs, crab cakes, seafood on the water in Baltimore check out Bo Brooks. It's in a neighborhood called Canton and is on the water. Fun spot.

Miss Shirley's for breakfast if you're in the inner harbor (there is one on Pratt street in an office building past power plant, look for the line).
