Is it worth it for the discount? Are they just really just an insurance reseller? Cancelled AAA several years ago, never really used it for discounts.

Believe an AARP membership is $16 p.a. Not a whole lot of money. If after the first year you don't get any value, you can cancel.

There are other discounts which are comparable to AARP discounts.

Their monthly magazine and their separate monthly tabloid size newspaper are almost worth the $15 a year.

I appreciate AARP lobbying for laws benefiting old guys like me. Otherwise, I see no advantage to joining AARP -- or AAA. I get the senior motel discount by simple asking for it based on my appearance or showing a drivers licence. Regarding AAA, towing , jump starts, unlocking, etc. are part of my insurance. Furthermore, it's easy to plan a driving trip with the internet.

They are a liberal lobby group that provides its members with links to insurance and other products/services geared toward the over 50 demographic.

It’s cheap. Face it. You are old. Time to start learning about Velcro sneakers.

Isn’t their main purpose to create marketing target lists? Do people that join see a 4-fold increase in junk mail, etc? Just curious.

I won't join AARP as they are a bit too liberal for my tastes.
I quit during Obamacare years when AARP supported a plan that cut $500 billion from Medicare. So what's a major debate today? Medicare is running out of money. Who could possibly have seen that coming?

"On the campaign trail, President Trump made a lot of promises, including the declaration that he would not cut Medicare as president. But that’s exactly what he’s doing with his proposed budget for 2019.

Trump’s plan includes $554 billion in cuts to Medicare, the federal health care program that provides insurance to 55 million Americans who are over age 65 or living with disabilities. The program helps ensure that every American can afford doctor’s appointments, medications, and life-saving treatments after they retire or when they are no longer able to work."

Really don't like the AARP mission but special annual price $12 for self and spouse. Don't use it for insurance but the discounts are definitely worth it. Restaurants, hotels, car rental. We travel back and forth (FL-PHL) and frequently take a few days to tour and drive so just on one trip alone we make our $12 plus. 10% off at Outback, Carraba's, Bone Fish plus several others. Summary it is worth $12 if you can tolerate the constant emails and postal mail.

Marketwatch is owned by Larry Kramer, a San Fran super progressive Liberal gay rights activist.
You put it in quotes....not facts....someone's opinion. You really need to do better.
I believe it was Obama who proposed robbing Medicare to pay for all the non-paying
Obamacare users. But I am not quoting anyone, just what I recall....

Marketwatch. It's not so much a quote as it is a stating of facts though.
Are these actual cuts or are they reductions to growth as projected in the 5 year plan? Oftentimes media refer to cuts when in fact they are not actual cuts but simply reductions in previous outyear budget forecasts

My recollection is the same as yours

This.

No AARP for me, thank you. Money grubbing b@stards.

AAA, on the other hand, provides me with more than trip tickets and towing...which I rarely use. You can have two documents notarized per day with your AAA membership...for free. That pays for my membership each year in a couple of weeks.

And they will notarize work documents too. Anything with my signature is free with the membership. So it saves my agency money as well.
