An altered state
If you have teenage kids, I can guarantee they are.

She is an amazing talent. Only 17, she has been recording for several years already and has amazing insight into the human condition. Great voice, like Fiona Apple. Excellent lyrics and stunning, inventive videos. The music, written with her brother Finneas, is well engineered with beautiful sounds.

Some of her looks are down right weird. And she always looks sad. But its not just for shock value but is part of her message in each song.

Her video Xanny is anti drug, anti alcohol, and anti smoking. Another one, titled Hostage, about the pressures of relationships had awesome special effects and interpretive dance.

She has a history of depression so some are dark and troublesome like Bad Boys and Lovely with Khalid deals with their depression. All part of teen age angst. Or all of life's angst. And idontwannabeyouanymore is a haunting video.

One other thing I like she is always fully clothed instead of some dancing slut look. Its all about the music.

I expect her to be a major star for years....if she can handle her fame and manage her depression.

I forget how I discovered her (maybe the Fiona Apple comparison - she's my favorite artist of all time) but she's really impressive. I love her new album and her tip of the hat to Moriarty (from the new Sherlock series) with her song 'You Should See Me In A Crown.'

Hey, I didn't link to youshouldseemeinacrown so its your fault!;)

Not sure just what she was trying to say there.

.... this isn't CGI - The girl actually put that f*%cker in her mouth... that alone would have made her famous.... then you hear her music
IdleWelloffCub-size_restricted.gif

Self made, incredibly talented, writes her own songs with the help of her brother, produced her first album in a makeshift studio in the spare bedroom of their home before she's 17.

It's been a long time since I listened to the entirety of an artist's debut album, multiple times.. but this album has been stuck in my head for about 2 weeks now. #TheAmericanDreamisnotdead

Hope she stays away from the drugs...

Bump; Remember you heard it here first!!

Singer Billie Eilish, who gave voice to young people struggling with depression on a do-it-yourself album she made at home with her older brother, is atop the music world.

The 18-year-old made history at the Grammy Awards Sunday. Not only did she become the youngest person to win one of Grammy’s top awards — record, song and album of the year, and best new artist — Eilish is the first artist to sweep all four since Christopher Cross in 1981.

I'm probably in the younger segment of this board, so I am embarrassed to say I don't know who she is. My wife was watching the grammy's last night as I read and was mostly disappointed, s I usually am, for what is considered main stream music. The one time they bring out a guy playing a guitar, they awaken Aerosmith from the crypt and have them strut around(there is so much good rock, alternative, indie music, I just wish they would introduce these people to something else besides over the hill old rockers and Green Day.). That said, when this girl started singing, I was locked in, she was fabulous.

She was on Stern and came off pretty grounded a few months back. Not surprised by her shining at all. Her brother and her have quite a little creative process and it works.

I knew nothing about her until a few weeks ago, the first time I saw her on the tube was a Carpool Karaoke segment. She came of, as you said, as grounded especially for such a youngster. If you watch the segment you'll see that she still lives in her mom's modest home. Her song Bad Guy is very catchy. The spider is her pet.

I'm a fan. It will be interesting to see what she does with the Bond theme.

+1. The other thing is last night was just too long. I wanted to see another of my favorite new artists, Gary Clark Jr. but ended up going to bed instead.
Glad Vampire Weekend won.
I thought Alicia Keys did a good job as host.

I've linked her videos a couple of times in the Weekend Jukebox thread.
I like the 60's, and 70's music too but there is some really good newer stuff being put out. And with Pandora and cable music channels its really easy to find.
I usually just search for Adult Alternative.

I thought she was terrible. Like really, really bad. But she’ll host yet again next year so what do I know...

Gary Clark Jr. is phenomenal live, highly recommend if you get the chance.

I think she's ok. I like the production and music and that she's not your typical bubble gum pop teenage star who gets handed prewritten songs from a record label. But I don't love her singing style. It's all whispering and much of it is spoken word and talking and not singing. I think she talented in terms of music and writing, but her singing just isn't my bag. It was even worse when I saw her live last year, the mix was awful and boosted the music and bass really high and drowned out her already quiet singing. It also doesn't help that at her live shows you are subjected to tens of thousands of youngsters screaming the whole time which also covers up the music.

You have to listen to the album all at once. It tells a story. Obviously she and her brother are a team. Her age is obvious, but it's a work of art nonetheless if you have any interest in alt music.

Very close with her brother and parents, sounds like a really nice well-adjusted family. Her parents are professional actors, didn't have a lot of money so they lived in a 2 bedroom house and brother and sister shared a bedroom. They recorded and produced a lot of that grammy winning album in that bedroom, pretty cool. Her brother is a gifted songwriter/producer and is a big part of her success. He could work for anybody now but likes to work with his sister, and the same is true of her. Parents knew enough about the entertainment business to make sure the kids had high quality management team, so they've had good advice and representation from the start.

Watch this video. It was released in March of 2016.....when she was only 14! Amazing that one so young could write this music, do this video, acted it out so well.

Actually, it was her brother, Finneas, that wrote this one. He penned the song and produced it in their bedroom at home. At the time, Billie was just his little sister. Finneas was unhappy with the song and was struggling with finishing it when, on a whim, he asked his sister to sing it. He was blown away by how much better it sounded with her doing the vocals. That's how she got her start and, as they say, the rest is history.

More on the song from Wikipedia

I really dislike her. Just not a fan. Not sure if it's because of the whisper singing. The fact her brother is writing all of the songs and "sharing" credit with her. Her poor poor tortured 17 year old, millionaire emo soul. The fact that she's underage and has made at least one over the top sexually provocative music video. It's just too apparent that this is all a well designed persona. Good for her that the public is eating it up, but I will never be a fan. Buuuuut, as I tell my kids all the time, we don't all have to like the the same things.

Who was the guy who performed with the blond wig, and had maybe 20-30 other non singers in blond wigs?
That was pretty epic. I am sure 95% of this board hated it if they saw it, but I thought it was awesome

That was Tyler the Creator. I agree with you - both in that I thought it was great and that 95% of the board probably hated it.

I like Tyler. His new album is all kinds of bonkers in the best way. His interview with Rick Rubin on the Broken Record podcast is really insightful and interesting. Some of the stuff he did to deliberately disrupt the composition and structure of traditional rap/R&B music was next level. His performance art only helps.

Kind of reminded me of a newer version of Laurie Anderson.

David Grohl compared her to Nirvana.

I only know of her and haven’t actually listened to any of her stuff yet. I’ll try to give her a listen tonight. Who could she be compared to?

Depressive condition and living and working in the music industry.
Rough combination.

Hmmmmm........ I guess I’ll give it a listen anyway.

Her earlier songs ('ocean eyes') are more traditional IMO; her newer stuff is dancier and has more of the whisper/signing which can be divisive. Listen to 'When I Was Older' or 'Ocean Eyes' versus something like 'Bad Guy' or 'You Should See Me In A Crown.'

I'd add her style/looks have changed quite a bit since then too.
