OT: Anyone see the new Spike Lee movie, Da 5 Bloods, on Netflix?...

I thought it was pretty good but I am a Spike Lee Movie fan and generally like most of his movies.
Delroy Lindo was flat out fantastic in it as was most of the acting.
And, as usual, Lee's Cinematography and music score were brilliant.
Give it a try.

Think the last Spike Lee film I saw was the one with Ed Norton; there have been at least three since then including the 'Old Boy' re-make. Love Delroy Lindo though - he's awesome.

That is a good one and Edward Norton is always so good.
I loved Inside Man and Miracle at St. Anna.
I have not seen The Black Klansman yet.
Yea I've been a big Delroy Lindo fan since Mountains of the Moon.
Side note: I like Walter Mosely and his books and thought that Delroy Lindo would have been a perfect Easy Rawlins. Danzel was just too pretty.:D

Denzel ruined things for a lot of leading AA actors...too pretty and too talented :).

Wait - I saw Inside Man too.

LOL. Guess I liked it better than you?

Ha - just forgot it was a Spike Lee joint. I still love the early films most - School Daze and Do The Right Thing. Early Giancarlo Esposito!!

Funny Spike Lee story. Years (ok, ages) ago my wife and I were walking on a street in Manhattan. It was late Fall/early Winter cold, getting dark, and the street was empty. Who is walking toward us, but Spike Lee. We stop and say "Hey, Spike Lee, we're big fa...." He scowls at us and just hurrys past.

Years later my wife has one of Spike's nephews in her class. She tells the nephew the story, as more of a funny one than anything else. He begins to apologize, but she tells him not to worry, she understands, his uncle probably gets stopped on the street all of the time, no biggie.

Couple of days later, Spike Lee shows up at her classroom to apologize personally. He could not have been nicer and more genuine.

I thought the movie was good but not great. (minor spoilers below)

* I thought the directorial choice to use the "old" actors to play the young soldiers without any CGI de-ageing was an interesting choice, but then I read it was mostly because of budgetary reasons. I think it would have worked better if Norman wasn't so young (i.e. it seemed odd for old guys to worship this super young guy). Anyway, I think there was maybe a way for this to be effective and powerful, but it fell short.

* The way they set up the land mine stuff was heavy handed. I don't think the LAMB crew really added anything to the movie (other than a love interest for the son, which seemed unnecessary to the larger story). By the time the land mine incident happened, I knew it was going to happen for quite some time. I think it would have been better if the only foreshadowing to the land mine was the one legged beggar in the beginning (who was obviously too young to have been in the war so it would have gotten the subtle point across that mines are still an issue).

* Having two actors from the Wire as leads occasionally threw me a bit as I have a hard time seeing those two in other roles without thinking Balmore.

* Overall, a good movie that is worth watching.

Thank you for your critical and well thought out analysis.

Do the Right Thing came out when I was in high school living on a military base in Japan. In Living Color was huge - and rap was very much 'the' music of the day - Public Enemy, NWA (first starting out), Professor Griff, etc. Everyone was wearing 'X' hats and Africa colored clothing was huge. I grew up on military bases and it was very diverse - I didn't realize how diverse until my dad was assigned recruiting duty in our hometown in Western PA. There was one African American kid. One. I was used to 35-40% of the class being non-white. I never had a traditional upbringing so seeing race relations play out in his films was eye opening for me. I do think he was pretty fair in Do The Right Thing too with Sal and his pizzeria. This scene is John Tuturro as a lot of my family in Western PA...

Many years ago my 4yr old daughter and I took a flight into Eagle/Vail, CO airport and Giancarlo with his daughter, sat across the isle from us. We had a great conversation Cool guy. I loved him in the Spike films as well as his role in the tv series Homicide.

TV SERIES HOMICIDE???? He's much better known as a restaurateur!

That reminds me of my true Duke Snyder story. As a kid outside of Ebbets field, I asked for his autograph. He told me to beat it, then the team moved to California.

Pretty much agree. What part of Western PA?
I'm from Somerset.

I am not a Spike Lee fan. I have seen a number of his films and enjoyed She's Gotta Have It and, surprisingly, Malcom X (or Malcom the Tenth as one pundit called it). I thought Do the Right Thing was pretty bad, yet critics thought it was great.
I watched Da 5 Bloods on Nexflix and thought this was a mediocrity. A good editor would have cut it down. The movie also had many endings but it just kept going on. I will grant the actors the kudos they deserve since their performances were outstanding.

I definitely thought there were parts that could have been edited out. Frankly if it was me I would have scrapped the whole Mine field team. They added nothing.
But over all I liked it. I am a sucker for good Cinematography and Lee always delivers and this maybe have been one of his best.

Mercer County!!!

Nope. The PA-Ohio border is pretty much a straight line, so it's hard for any county to be west of another. But, if you want to get picky, Greene County is probably the furthest west.
