Visiting these two cities later this year, with family of 5. Looks like there's no Lyft (yet) in either, and of the two only Athens has Uber. Planning on taking in all the main historic sites in both but want some less "touristy" experiences too.

Any recommendations on getting around? Is it worth getting a rental car for flexibility to come and go as we please?

If you have any hidden gems or off-the-beaten path ideas in either city, I'd love to hear them too. Thanks

For a different side of somewhat gritty Athens (which I personally really like), be sure to check out the beautiful coastline of the Athens Riviera - you can do so using public buses or via the tram. Don't miss the Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion.

Also, for a cool, local experience, go to one of Athen's open air cinemas at night (assuming you are visiting later this summer or in early fall).

Only been to Bsrcelons

Don’t rent a car. It’s nit worth it if you plan on staying in the city. BCN has a hop on/hop off bus that is great. You cN get a 48 hour pass. Take a tour to Monserrat. It’s beautiful.

BCN has(d) a Picasso Museum that has some of his lesser works. But still interesting.
Agree, the hop on/hop off buses are the way to go in Barcelona.

You can walk to a lot of things in Athens if you're staying near Syntagma square. Go up to a rooftop bar like Hotel Grande Bretagne for a great nighttime view of the Acropolis.

It's a long way from places like Guell Park to downtown Barcelona. I suggest a hop on hop off bus tour.

This! We were there last October. Great views and people were fantastic!

Athens has a hop on hop off as well. That said, if you’re staying near the Plaka, I’d say you don’t need to do the hop on hop off. Depends on the ages of the kids. 2 months ago the wife and I stayed in Hotel Phillipos just S of the Parthenon and the acropolis museum, and we walked everywhere. Granted it was just the two of us but the walking wasn’t bad at all. For a great view of the acropolis at night AND the temple of Zeus, check out the rooftop restaurant at Athens Gate hotel. The changing of the guard at the parliament is really cool if you like that kind of thing. The Ermou (Main Street that runs away from parliament) is cool as well.

The acropolis: GO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHEN IT OPENS. I REPEAT, GO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING WHEN IT OPENS. The cruise ship crowds are insane as early as 2 hours after it opens. 1 way in 1 way out so it gets congested going in. Must see though.

The agora: if you’ve been to Rome, this is the equivalent of the Roman forum outside of the coliseum. Lots of good history here.

The Palma: “old city”. Cool spot to walk around but be prepared to be hounded by people selling shit. This is he touristy area.

Acropolis museum: if you’re into museums and whatnot, this is a good one.

Food: To Kati Alto. So good that wife and I ended up eating here like 4 times in 6 days. Funny thing is we’re that couple that likes to go to different places to eat every meal, but the pork at this place was without a doubt the best I’ve ever eaten. It’s along the street on the S side of the acropolis museum.

As far as barclona, was there 2 years ago so I don’t remember much off the top of my head. La rambla was a cool spot to take a “stroll” on. The waterfront is also really cool. Sagrada familia is BEAUTIFUL. We stayed at hotel reding chroma which was at a good spot. The best part about Spain was everything outside of the cities (Rhonda, arcos de la frontera, Grenada... etc). Milan and Barcelona were meh...

Thanks a lot for the feedback and ideas. We're staying right near the Acropolis at Hera Hotel and in BCN at Arc la Rambla.

Anyone ever get the City Pass for either? Pay one price and get discounts or free entrance to a number of attractions and museums. I probably just need to price it out compared to the sum of the costs for the things we want to see.

Have any insight on neighborhoods to avoid? Heard somewhere that BCN is called the pickpocket capital of Europe (or the world?).

For your transportation needs to/from the Athens airport, I highly recommend using Athens Experiences, www.athensexperiences.gr

I used them last year, we also a family of 5 traveling, they provided us with a mini bus that easily transported us and our luggage. Their rates are very reasonable and the owner/son who was the driver spoke fluent English.

It depends on how long you're staying and how many museums you want to go through. If you're only there a day or two I would focus on the Acropolis & Parthenon, the vendors in Monasteraki, changing of the guard at the Parlaiment Building in Syntagma Square, and the rooftop bars with views of the Acropolis at night. The other ruins are not nearly as impressive, especially if you've been to places like the Roman Forum.

If you have extra time around Greece I'd highly recommend trips to Rhodes and Santorini.

There's a a lot more to see and do in Barcelona. That's why a hop on hop off bus is a good option. Your transporation is covered and you can see a lot of stuff.

Nice coincidence, family and I stayed at the Phillipos in July 17.

OP. The location Phillipos is perfect for walking to almost all the major attractions in Athens. When heading up the Acropolis do it first thing, to beat the heat and the crowds. Then when you are descending you can smile as you pass the long lines of folks standing in the sun that look like they want to be anywhere but.

I never drove at all, booked all logistics ahead of time, to/from airport and to port to get on ferry to head to isles. Note we found that the lodging was quite expensive, but once there found the attractions, food and drink surprisingly cheap.

Also, went to Santorini and Naxos. Highly recommend both. On Santorini we stayed in a small quiet village vs Fira or Oia, which you will want to visit, but are quite busy. If up for a serious amazing walk, approx 9 miles with no shade, there is a path along the caldera from Fira to Oia. Naxos amazing laid back beach destination, was perfect ending to more busy city and Santorini.

Enjoy, someday we will go back and check out some of the other isles!

Ok, SERIOUS coincidence. Wife and I did the same thing only opposite. Santorini first (which we also did the oia to Fira hike). However we didn’t like either town. Way too touristy. Although the caldera sunset was amazing. We then did Naxos and loved it. Seafood was amazing. Then we ended our trip in Athens.

Subways are really good in Barcelona. Eats - Paco Maralgo and Cal Pep, 2 outstanding tapas restaurants. Also don’t tip more than 5% if you want to to tip.

Also, I believe Uber is available in Barcelona. My daughter studied abroad their last summer and she used Uber frequently. Also, take a food tour, use Trip Advisor to find one.

It is the pickpocket capital, but if you’re smart about it, and all of your traveling party is also aware of this fact, then you’ll be fine. I had my pocket picked on a subway on the last day in Barcelona because I let my guard down. In retrospect, it was my fault because I knew better.

Would avoid either place at height of summer. Totally different experiences when the narrow streets aren’t choked with cruise ship passengers and such. Shoulder season travel is the way to go.

Only been to Barcelona.

The hop-on hop-off bus is nice but if you want to go to Sagrada Familia (make sure you get tickets in advance) use the Metro - there is a stop right next to the cathedral and the Metro is easy to use. For a contrast, also visit the old cathedral in the Gothic quarter. Also try to see some of the other Gaudi buildings in the city.
