Team Android myself here, but a family friend destroyed his iPhone 5 and wants the new iPhone 6. His contract expires this month. He uses virtually no data (not sure why he even wants a smart phone) and is looking for the most cost-effective way to get an iPhone 6/monthly service plan. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

For starters, the 6 isn't "new" anymore ;)
I'd recommend a used 5 until the next new iPhone (probably 6s and 6s+) is out this fall

Regarding your question, I wouldn't look for the best deal so much as who has the best service in the area you typically are using the phone. for me, that is AT&T, but 10 minutes away Verizon is better. The price differences aren't that great

I'm not aware of any bargain 6s out there. Unlocked it's going to run you 600-700. And on an installment plan it is going to cost the same if not more.

If you want to get a 6 on a 2-year contract it will probably still be somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 plus $80-100 a month. T-mobile is probably the fairest deal out there but not cheap. Their installment plan is $27 a month plus service is going to be $60-70 with tax for a fairly no frills plan.

However, you can do an iPhone 5c unlocked for about $200 used/unlocked and then a $35 plan on Cricket.

Agree it might be good to wait until the new model comes out. Then used 6s will start to fall in price.

Each month I get closer and closer to dumping Verizon and have been asking myself this very same question.

The only thing that keeps me is that I have unlimited data. But, I'm strongly considering Republic Wireless and StraightTalk, the latter of which will accept my current VZW iPhones and work on VZW towers.

Nobody needs to be spending $350 a month for a family plan any more, that's for sure. There is healthy competition.
