Any Opinions....

I met Barry Bonds in Pittsburgh in 91, actually ran into him downtown, he was pretty cool. One of the reasons I think he used cause word is he turned into a total jerk. Got an autograph from him.

Ran into Cal Ripken in Baltimore at the airport about 5 years ago. Best guy I have ever met. Totally cool and took his time to take pictures with pretty much everyone.

Played hockey with a few Pens back in the late 80's at old Golden Mile. Phil Bourque was very cool and showed us a few things/

Met some old guy on the Penn State campus a few years ago. He wore these khakis that he rolled up to keep the grass stains off. He liked bourbon and his wife's lasagna. Seemed to always be quoting some poet or something - I knew he read a lot, because he had these really thick glasses. Was pretty nice to me - seemed interested in finding out how I was doing, more than me asking about him.

He must have been someone famous, because for a long while, I saw people dress up like him, and wear his picture on t-shirts. Someone told me they used to have a cardboard version of him, holding a football, that you could buy and set up in your house. Never really took the guy to be involved with football - he seemed more like professor of English or something to me. I heard they used to have a statue of him somewhere, but I guess they must have taken it down or something. Seems odd that a University would take down a statue of a guy who seemed like an English professor - maybe they have a culture problem at that place, and don't really like guys that focus on education.

I just keep forgetting his name.....Palermo, Polanco, Patino.....something like that.

Nice fella - heard he passed away a few years ago. Sad to hear- I would have liked to met him again and shake his hand.

met Michelle Lee (Knots Landing) and Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue) in a bar at the Regi Royal (sp?)in NYC . BS with them, mostly Sharon a long time. It seems Sharon was the national spoke person for PADI (scuba diving) at the time. We talked about that, the fact she was a diver too. Michelle Lee is like, WTF Sharon, is what this guy saying is true about you Scuba diving? Sharon said yes it was, and she really liked diving.

Joe Paterno - as I was entering liquor store on Atherton, he was leaving. I stopped and stared in dis-belief, after several seconds of staring at each other, he says "aren't you going to say hello". I did and added "big party" as he had bag with several bottles. He replied, "in-laws in town, have to keep them happy". We both laughed and he left, I was crushed that my friends out in the car did not see it at all.
Franco - Nittany Lion Inn several years ago, very gracious
Samantha Fox - seat right in front of her returning from spring break. 30 years later my neck still hurts from straining to look back at her...
Dave Brown(Flyers) - golf course, one of our foursome did not show, guy behind us playing alone, asked if he wanted to play through or join us. He joined, did not realize till about half way through the round who he was....awesome golfer

I think that guy is a legend in the way of Robin Hood or King Arthur. The many good things I've heard about him just can't be true, can they?

Spent a bit of time with Newt Gingrich when he toured the facility where I was working. Ditto Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson. Also gave a tour to the then CEO of Pepsico who let me play golf anytime as his guest at Old Baldy in Saratoga, WY

Jungle Jack Hanna--spoke at an alumni event many years ago--and brought a tiger cub with him

For you soccer guys:

Frankie Hedjuk, Mike Lapper (who I knew personally due to volunteer work), Brian Maisonneuve, who is a really great guy (he's still good friends with a co-worker of my wife), Sigi Schmid, Brian Bliss--these are guys I talked with a bit as opposed to just getting an autograph or a brief conversation. I did meet Lamar Hunt once or twice--but didn't talk long. Also a few more obscure Crew players who went (and in some cases still do) to my church.

Only a true NASCAR fan could appreciate this. For a belated 50th birthday present, my son took me to speedweeks in Daytona in 2008 which happened to be the 50th anniversary of the race.We flew down on Wednesday night and went to the duals on Thursday afternoon. We purchased our tickets and were walking to our seats when I became aware of an older gentleman walking along side of me. I glanced over at him and he looked at me and said "Great day for a race, huh?" I said yeah and kept on walking and then I thought hey that guy looks familiar. I turned and took a harder look at this older gentleman and suddenly realized here I was walking around Daytona International Speedway next to H A "Humpy" Wheeler, one of the foremost promoters of NASCAR.

My son was able to get Larry Johnson's autograph after the IU game in 2002 when he rushed for over 2000 yards. He was 7 and it was his first Penn State game.

I met Roy Williams and spoke to him briefly in an airport shortly after he became UNC's head coach. He seemed very nice and not put out chatting with a life long Tar Heel basketball fan.

Sat next to Bob Davie when he was the head coach at ND...we were on a flight to New Orleans; he was on a recruiting trip.

Met Ned Johnson in the mid 90's at a Fidelity Investments Christmas Party. He came across as very down to earth and sincere. It is not everyday you chat with a billionaire for 5-10 minutes.

First time I met Arnold, it was at the urinals in a locker room. I DID shake his hand afterwards.

The second or third time I met Jack, was at a party the evening of an afternoon tOSU/PSU game where PSU didn't fare well. He was drunk and I ended up laying into him about Tressel. He did admit that he had great admiration for Joe though.

Met John Unitas at a public golf course in Ocean City shortly before he passed. Also met a bunch of 1950's-era Eagles players when I played racquetball at the Y in York early in the 90s. I think Ed Khayat was one of them. They were great guys, and watching them get ready to play was something else with all the supports and tape and stretching. They never ran, just kind of walked, around the court. All of those hits took their toll.

Also, met Clay Aiken on a flight from LA to Charlotte. We were in first class, and in the same row. I had no clue who he was and paid no attention to him until the flight attendants kept bugging him to take pictures after we landed. I was continuing to Providence and had to get off the plane for awhile, and saw lots of commotion at the gate, where he was posing for pictures and signing autographs. I noticed a woman watching that I think was his agent or handler, and asked who he was. She told me it was Clay, and then said "You know, American Idol!" when she saw the blank look on my face. When that didn't work either, she turned away and refused to talk to me since I was so uncultured. Actually a proud moment in my life.

Long story short having quick breakfast in a crowded O'Hare. "Mind if you I join you?"
Look up and see Joe DiMaggio. Of course I accepted his invitation.

We had a 30 minute exchange of how he was my childhood hero. Every bit agentleman as his reputation.

At home told my sub teenage son, where is the autograph? Never crossed my mind to ask for one

I've met so many different folks related to the football program that I couldn't possibly list them all. To a man (and in some cases a lady) they were all very nice and gracious people. As noted above, Franco really stood out as exceptionally down-to-earth and friendly. He used to always help out at the Children's Miracle Network telethons years ago when I was a volunteer and was wonderful to everyone associated with those efforts.

Met Billy Cunningham when he coached the Sixers at the Philly airport waiting for a plane. Ran into Bobby Clarke and Reggie Leach the same place. Nice guys.

Met Harry Kalas, Whitey Ashburn and Chris Wheeler at a restaurant/bar in Chicago. Didn't even know they were there until one of them saw my Phillies t-shirt and Harry said "Now THERE'S a man with some class!" I bought them a round on my way out the door.

Saw David Jannsen (TV's star of "The Fugitive") in San Diego's Balboa park in the mid-1970's when they were shooting a series called Harry O. What an asshole! He bitched about everything and everyone within earshot.

Rode up a hotel elevator in 1985 in Chicago with Joan Benoit Samuelson, winner of the 1984 Olympic Marathon. We chatted for about 25 floors and three stops until I got off. Great lady! She won the Chicago Marathon the following day in record time.

Met NASCAR's Denny Hamlin at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Richmond, VA. I was a friend of one of his childhood buddies. Very nice guy.

Flew in a Navy Helo from Bander Abbas, Iran out into the Persian Gulf to the USS Kitty Hawk with Admiral Thomas Moorer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on a diplomatic mission back when we had friendly relations with the Shah of Iran. I was the helo crewman and had to strap him and his staff into their seats safely. The Admiral was wearing this big ceremonial sword which wasn't conducive with sitting so I had to help him get "ungiged" until we landed back on the carrier for an airshow. He told me "Keep up the good work, petty officer." I said "You too, Admiral." Damn, I was so witty!

Having been a student during the 1986 championship run I held everyone on the 1986 Miami team in total contempt. I even once called into a talk radio program shortly after Jimmy Johnson became coach here in Dallas and asked him to explain how he was so overwhelming out coached on January 2nd 1987... I was cut off and another call taken.

Living in Dallas I held no one with more contempt that Michael Irving. However, in 1997 I began dating a gal who would later become wife #1. She knew Michael well and eventually we connected at a sports bar. I was in the bathroom when he came over to our table to say hi to my gal. When she asked him to have a seat until I came back to the table he said "I will stand... I'd rather not be disrespectful(to me)." I ended up talking with him numerous times... and let me tell you me is really one of the most down to earth, grounded, kind people I have ever met. He once told me that he had 20+ siblings and cousins living off every contract that he signed and he had to push his PR every chance he could. I once asked him about the Fiesta bowl and he just shook his head and said he will never understand how they lost that game... but he did admit Ray Isom hit a great deal harder than he was expecting.

Jack Dempsey, never saw a person with such large hands. He owned a restaurant in NYC and my aunt knew him well. We would go there and eat dinner, he was always very cordial. Joseph V Paterno, you all know him. He was guest speaker at IUP at a library event trying to raise $$$$ to help their library. I was an invited guest also. He came to every table and spent a few minutes at each table. Great, charismatic person. Jack Nicklaus, eating in a small restaurant in Palm Beach Fla. He saw our golf attire and came over and we all shock hands and had some small talk. George W Bush, POTUS.

Well as a big baseball fan as a kid many encounters with players at autograph shows so those dont count if you have to pay to meet in my book

However being a Sox and Phillies fan, going to he Vet was easy but going to Fenway on a once a year trek was always exciting especially since we always seemed to have the luck of catching the AL world series entrant every year we went from 85 to 92, but the best trip we had was 87. We stayed at the Sheraton on Boylston, which was usually the away teams hotel. Of course the Twins are staying there and its always a trip to see all the team luggage roll in. My younger brother and I armed with baseballs and magazines to get signed in the lobby. Was able to get Carlton and Blyleven that way. We got all of them during that game series, but the best was 2 separate times. 1) just sitting in the lobby near the bar and Tony Olivia and Harmon Killebrew sit down next to our table. It was nice to meet them, they were very gracious and talked a little old time baseball to a 17 year old that loved Baseball history. 2) a fabled elevator ride with Hrbek Puckett and Gaetti. My brothers pen exploded all over Gaetti....never forget that. Hrbek was one big guy and Puckett was so nice.

I will always believe that was what being a fan was all about, a kid workin hard to get autographs and appreciating baseball history.

Guess I can save the runin with the Canseco boys in Miami in 91during our road trip to watch the nits play Miami--volleyball at Pennrods on the beach---butwads to say the least

Here's a couple different ones.
Hall and Oates on an Air Canada Flight from Montreal to NYC. In Coach!! Daryl Hall was pretty cool and seemed very bright, Oates seemed a little slimy. Sat in same row as Oates. He read "girly" mags the whole way. Hall talked the whole time with his manager.
Randy Macho Man Savage and Miss Elizabeth at Greater Pitt AP. She was very attractive, he was a big, ugly guy but was nice to me.
Played golf in FL with Carl Yastrzemski. Totally a random pairing during Spring Training. Had great eyes. Kept hitting it far into woods, but would always find it!
Franco and Lynn Swann in US Air Club at Greater Pitt.
Mario Lemeuix, Dan Quinn (a bit of a jerk) and Tom Borasso at a West Penn/Tri-State Golf Tourneys in Pittsburgh. (Before Celebs made money playing golf). They were all very good players.

Jack Palance was born near Hazelton, PA. His birth name was Volodymyr Palahniuk. My favorite actor was also born in PA. Charles Bronson (Charles Dennis Buchinsky) near Johnstown.

I've never been enamored of famous people. To me they are no different than someone who busted their ass in anonymity just to support a family. That said, I did meet the Dos Equis guy. I sneezed and he blessed me.

JoePa at our high school banquet and then years later at the beach in Avalon. After that it would be Junior Bridgeman, played golf with him in Florida.
I should also add a non athlete which would be Melvin Laird, former Secretary of Defense. I had a golf locker right beside him and thus ended up talking to him often, He's so friendly and such a great guy.
