America's deadliest beach: Sheriff of Panama City beach slams swimmer for ignoring warnings after riptides drown SEVEN in two weeks - including ex-NFL QB Ryan Mallett

I was in Destin a week ago. We had double red flags warnings on our last day and weren't allowed to go into the water past our calves on our last full day.
Hit Buc-ee's on the way home.

Officials identified the people who died at the Florida beach this month as: a 52-year-old man, who died on June 15; a 47-year-old man from Alabama, who died on June 18; a 53-year-old man from South Carolina, who died on June 21; a 47-year-old man from Tennessee, who died on June 22 at a stretch of beach near the Flamingo Hotel and Tower; a 68-year-old man from Michigan, who died on June 24; a 63-year-old man from Georgia, who died on June 24; and a 39-year-old man from Georgia, who died on June 24.

Common denominator- middle aged and older guys. You would think by that age you’d gain a little wisdom - I know I have

Nah. This is ‘Murica - we don’t need to listen to no sci-in-tist telling us that it’s too dangerous to go in the ocean. Them sci-in-tists are nothing but commie lib’ruls. Ain’t no one gonna tell me what to do!

Probably thought they were still young and powerful and could swim through it.

If a person is presented with information and makes a personal decision and is willing to accept the consequences, do you have a problem with that? Or do you believe that people in this country should be slaves of the State whose lives are dictated to them? Many people die every day from lung cancer from smoking despite all of the warnings, but that was their decision. Cue Devo’s Freedom of Choice, which several elected and unelected creeps tried to destroy three years ago.

If you swim horizontally you should be fine, no?

Generally you want to let it take you out - they generally don’t span very long distances, then swim horizontally until you can work your way back in. Most people who aren’t rail thin have enough body fat to float/tread water without too much effort. Even if you can’t make it in, you can tread water and signal for help. Either fighting the current and tiring yourself - or panicking - dooms people.

Another big safety tip. If you ever are in trouble near rocks and the waves are heavy, getting out of the situation is counterintuitive. You don’t want to try and climb out as that can get you battered and knocked out/incapacitated. Instead, dive under the wave action and swim into deep water away from the rocks. Better to try and wait for rescue or find an alternate landing place than get turned into hamburger.

I was just in Maui in April and at some beaches known to be dangerous. I was amazed at some of the dumb shit I saw. People with their kids near obviously strong rips, swimming close to rocks. I spent a good 10 minutes watching what was going on - and watching the locals and the surfers - before getting in past my waist.

If stuck in a riptide, don’t panic, don’t try to swim, as mentioned, float. You won’t go to far out to sea, you will be pulled parallel to the beach and it will end after maybe 50+ yards.

Then don’t make threads like this lamenting the deaths of those who ignored the double red flags and riptide warnings. That’s my problem - idiots who think they know better and ignore the warnings of experts, then doing dumb stuff and putting the lives of rescuers at risk and utilizing rescue agency resources. When said idiots die we’re supposed to say aww how sad. Nuts to that - add them to the Darwin awards list.

Guess I’m testy on this as just last week where I live a rescuer drowned after saving two folks who were swimming in an area where it was clearly prohibited.

From the article “
I have watched while deputies, firefighters and lifeguards have risked their lives to save strangers. I have seen strangers die trying to save their children and loved ones, including two fathers on fathers day.'

He said some of his staff were abused and cursed for warning people of the dangers, and fining those who ignored the laws.

'These same heroes, who have risked it all to save others, have been cursed and given the finger, while trying to warn visitors of the life-threatening dangers,' Ford said.”
It’s those behaviors that piss me off - disrespecting rescuers and putting them at risk, putting their lives at risk, putting their innocent kids lives at risk all because some idiot thinks they can ignore the warnings and do whatever they want.
