with the critters.

Please share with me what you used; traps that eliminate? Traps that havahart? Poisons?

I don't like them. I don't want them in my flower/shrub beds. I want them gone.

TIA for your successful solutions.

It's been a big season for chipmunks in my neighborhood in northern Virginia, too. Not sure why. However, unlike you I have no interest in exterminating them. As far as I can tell, they cause no harm to anything. My backyard is also a habitat for squirrels, but they are tolerable, also. It's the damn occasional deer wandering in from the woods that cause damage to some plantings.

I remember Donald Duck got Chip and Dale out of his house by building them their own house. Maybe you could plant some flower beds just for them.

5 Gallon bucket fill half way with water
Throw some seeds or nuts in.
You'll have a couple chipmunks inks drowning per day

I killed 2 recently and just missed another today with good ol' Victor (E. Bell) rat traps. Mouse traps are going to be too small. Smear some peanut butter on there and some bird seed or nuts and you'll get them. Difference is I have been trapping them in my garage where there are no other animals. If you have pets or neighbors with pets they could get hurt bad in a rat trap and you may also trap some other wild critter you aren't targeting.

They are destructive and I fully understand you wanting to get rid of them. If you don't have neighbors and are a decent shot, and have some patience, get an airsoft gun or a .22 and shoot em.

You mentioned Deer and that can mean deer ticks. Chipmunks can carry those tics and that can mean Lyme Disease. I don't know how big a problem Lyme is in Northern VA, but in the Pittsburgh area it is becoming a serious issue. Lyme can cause various health problems and a friend of mine died from Lyme 2 years ago (death is, admittedly, unusual, but health problems are not).

Chipmunks?? I wish I had those small little varmint. Let's talk squirrels...I've concluded that all mammals with bushy tails are worthless.

Havaheart traps work well, just have to make sure you get the right size one. Also make sure to take them far enough away that they don't come back.

Squirrels did a lot of damage to my house, and 'lived' in my attic, until I started shooting them with my .22.

Trap them. My father in law will trap 1-2 per day easy. After that, you decide what you want to do with them. Pellet gun or .22 might be more fun, but that will require you sitting out there waiting for them all day ,

As another poster with chipmunk problems I will echo a few things....mouse traps do not work, you have to have a very small live trap to work (don't be fooled by some), pellet guns work great, the bucket didn't work for me.

Couple of ways to kill em.

First like another poster here says, use rat traps. I think I killed about 30 of them last year. And once you locate their burrows, wait till night when they are in there and drop rat poison into the holes. Cover with a rock and kick the rock into the ground somewhat so they cannot get out. They eat the poison and die underground and so no disposal to take care of. Perfect solution if you can find the holes.

airsoft gun or a .22

a .22 (or .17 HMR) is too much gun for around the house and overkill. I don't know much about airsoft guns, except that they are toys that young boys shoot at each other. I think a pellet gun or maybe a bb gun would be the right tool for the job.

You'll shoot your eye out.

The bucket works for me. I put a 2 by4 from ground to the bucket. Put sunflower seeds on the 2 x 4 and also in the bucket of water. It works every time for me

Never had that work.
Why would a chipmunk walk up a 2"x4" board littered with bait/feed and then suddenly decide to go swimming? Unless the contraption was equipped with some spring loaded dunk board or stick, it just doesn't make sense.

We all know that Chip and Dale were / are smarter than most posters on this board and they certainly wouldn't have fallen (literally and figuratively) for such a ruse.

If I was out in the woods and I didn't live on a block with neighbors I'd be bustin on em with a .22

I don't know much about airsoft guns either other than what I saw on youtube. My old Crosman .177 pump won't hold air anymore. I think this airsoft thing is what all the cool kids are using. It's not Nerf.

Y'all be careful now. Hear?

It's the damn occasional deer wandering in from the woods that cause damage to some plantings.

A Canadian friend of mine suggested that putting raw sheep's wool on plants will keep the deer away. I bought a package of raw sheep's wool on Amazon for about $12 and tried it out on my backyard plants about a month ago. We have not had a deer since. I haven't had to reapply the sheep's wool yet, even though we have had heavy rains from time to time. I am not sure why this works, but the wool smells a bit gamey, so maybe that is what is keeping the deer away.

I think the idea is that there are some seeds floating on the water and the chipmunks jump in to get them.

I don't know. But at last count my parents are over 100 chipmunks dead in 4 years using the 2x4 into the swimming pool.

I am looking for a talented chipmonk. One that can swim. I have two small haveaheart traps when I catch one I try to teach it to swim no luck so far

"Maxwell Mouse"...get a coffee can.

Beer and seeds inside, sticks or velcro up side so they can get in, but they never come out.

Get a rattlesnake or two. They love chipmunks and won't bother your flowers or shrub beds. :>

Yeah. Pretty sure that kind of fish bait is not legal around here, though.

Just tell 'Dave' to take them all home! Alvin and the rest listen to Dave!

My son and his pellet gun. He got about a dozen of them during our last trip to my folks house. I will rent him to you cheap, but you have to feed him:p

Feed Him Chipmunk Stew

First, you are going to need about 10 or so fat chipmunks - best thing to do is capture the little buggers and fatten them up. This way you can make sure they are disease free. Also, you can monitor what they eat. Unless you don't care then, just go out and hunt down 10-15 chipmunks. If you use a shotgun, please make sure to remove all shot from the meat first. Make sure they are fresh kills - makes it easier to peel the fur off. Make sure you decapitate them right after and strip their fur off. Hold them upside down to make sure all the blood runs out.

Save the fur - you can make a nice pair of gloves with them later. With a sharp knife, de-bone the little guys, but save the bones. Once you have your pile of bones, put them in a 2 qt pan and boil them. You will use this as your stock for your stew. Chop up meat into fine pieces or grind

• 2 lb. Chipmunk meat pieces
• 1 small yellow onion, chopped
• 1 small green pepper, chopped
• 2 stalks of celery, chopped
• 2 large carrots, chopped
• 3 potatoes, large chunks
• 1 can (14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained
• 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste
• salt and pepper to taste

Use your broth you made from the bones to boil the meat in a large sauce pot on low heat. Make sure you do this slowly, use a slow cooker to make the meat tender. Cook for about 3 hours on low heat. Then let it set for 30 minutes and skim off any fat. Add potatoes; cook until tender, bring up to a low boil on medium heat, stirring frequently. ADD all remaining ingredients; mix well. Bring to boil; cover. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
