went downtown and played an open jam last night.. there were some hitters in there (I backed up my buddy who is regular) lot 45-55 yo brothers who could really play some funk as well.. I'm just the white dude who grew up playing hair rock and radio stuff LOL.. One of the best times in my life, but not what you would call comfortable. I kicked back 2 pints of some Kona blond stuff (over 4-5 hour period, I'm really careful and not that big of a drinker anyway..at least not since I hit 27 and found out what a real hangover would do to you when you have a real job).. but I was still nervous. Played a great set.. we had a funk bass player and oddly enough a middle-aged school teacher looking lady on the skins..

So guitar is my thing, but it also forces me to step out of my comfort zone. It's almost like your first couple football starts on serious action you get when you play football...the first song is like when you get earholed out on the field, it wakes you up. This is my 3rd open jam, and I'm getting the hang of it. I played 3 sets on Saturday with the 1rst set being a disaster.. my guitar tuning got bumped do to my having to move an amp to the others side of the stage.. it was horrible, I was playing lead and the notes were not where they were supposed to be and I was just confused..I felt like leaving.. but found some new people and they let me play back-to-back sets to close things down after I got locked in.

Thing is, I'm a natural football player, but I wasn't born with a great ear music wise, I'm a good player but it's taken me 3x as long as those natural players. I'll clarify on the football thing .. I never threw a ball in a game, I never played RB, and I didn't play WR.. I could hit, tackle, understood leverage, could diagnose plays, and had a motor that would make a Ford Mustang proud. I would have KILLED to be a modern player.. I would have ate up the 7v7 thing and learned to catch and defend better all summer/spring long..baseball was just something I did until football started.. who knew you coulld play all year?

Had I kept playing football.. no doubt I would have been a D3/D2 special teams player and a coach for life, I went to 4 high schools and 4 states and hung up football as I was kinda pissed about having to make a new team everywhere I went. Those moves shut down my football, but one of my stops was San Diego and I knew I wanted to get back here.. and I've been here for 19 years now.-sg
