OT: Cool animation of what you'll see of the solar eclipse in your zip code.

Just received our glasses on Friday. Should be a fun road trip down to the Smoky Mts.

I didn't realize that if you live in the path of the total eclipse you can take off your protective glasses for the 2 or so minutes of totality.... fingers crossed for clear skies.

Yeah, humans. Why? Do you have some doubts about Player2BNamedL8r?

Can't you just glance at the damn thing just as you might glance at the sun? I don't get this burnt retina hype. I'm not gonna stare at it.
I really dunno. I was asking myself that this morning. I was about to post that, yeah, you can give it a glance and all will be hunky dory but I'm not sure at all. I have a real fear of messing with my eyes (being that I'm 20/800 without my specs, this isn't an idle fear), so I'm just going to watch it online, safe or not.

I just did a quick search on this and I'm not comfortable with summarizing what I read. I have an idea of what's safe and what's not but I'm not an expert so I'll let anyone who's more up to speed on the science weigh in if they so desire.

Can't you just do what all the people do at concerts anymore? Hold your phone to it and watch the screen?

Traffic in Wyoming?
Maybe. On a normal day you can drive to Wyoming and beyond as fast as you want but on the morning of the eclipse no one really knows. Nothing like this has ever happened. Think of several Beaver Stadiums of people all jumping in their cars on the same morning and getting on the same four lane highway. It could be terrible.

The Wyoming eclipse view will be that much better?

In Denver the eclipse will be about 92%. The sky will get darker it will seem like dusk but in Wyoming it will be 100% so it will be totally dark. Dark enough that you can see stars and streetlights can come on. It's a completely different experience. In the middle of the eclipse path it will last about 2 1/2 minutes. I went to an eclipse down in Mexico in the 90's and it was a pretty cool experience. So if you are into this kind of thing and live near the path of totality I'd check it out.

I think I'm getting about 85%. That's all I deserve.:(;)

I've read some people say they will be satisfied if being at 95% totality. That's like the difference of being pregnant and almost being pregnant. Big difference.

We'll be in Bryson City, NC. Totality will be for 1:57. Having researched this area, sounds like huge crowds, being right outside Great Smoky Mountains NP.

Don't be looking through a camera of cell phone either.

Where do you get the glasses? A quick look on amazon shows they are sold in packs of 5 or 10.

Grease Monkey, which is a chain of oil changing places here in Colorado, is giving them away. I don't know where you live but if it is near the eclipse path they shouldn't be hard to find.

Just got an email from amazon stating they couldn't confirm that the glasses we received were from a recommended manufacturer. They caution against using them and refunded our money.

Wonder how many will be using bogus glasses on 8/21? That's kind of a scary thought

Any glasses used during the solar eclipse should be labeled as complying with ISO safety standard 12312-2. Glasses without this standard printed on them should not be used. Here is a link listing approved brands and vendors of solar glasses.

Oh, for chrissakes. I'm gonna glance up a couple of times and that's it. No different than I would on a sunny day. If someone wants to stare at the damn thing that's another story.

can someone give me a quick astronomy lesson (lol, if that is possible)... I ran the animation and the moon "enters" the sun at the two o'clock position and leaves at the 9 o'clock position, seems like too much of a "turn," almost 90 degrees.
the moon is rotating around the earth; the earth is rotating around the sun
the curve is normal
best I can do, I did not take that easy astronomy course my freshman year

What about my pets? Do they need sunglasses too?

I actually heard that on the radio, could not stop laughing.
