OT: Covers better than the original

Warning on Black Sabbath’s first (debut) album. A cover of an Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation song.

I won't argue that this Beatles medley cover was better than the originals, but the job that State College locals Noah Figlin and his group Unbanned did on “Tomorrow Never Knows”, “Because”, “Eleanor Rigby”, and “A Day In The Life” was absolutely spectacular. To me, it was easily the best performance at the Strawberry Fields charity benefit at the State Theatre

Willie Johnson's 1930 version of 'John the Revelator' with the gospel blues call and response.

PA's own, The Badlees, Rock version.

I like this version better. I'm sure I'm in a minority. Nothing against Green Day - who I like, but I just didn't like this song. The strings and mandolin really make a difference here imo. All of Glen's songs were covers because he couldn't read or write music. Todd Youth was touring w/ him and played on this record btw. R.I.P. Todd.

This counts as a cover, right?!

I also love Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt”, Disturbed’s “Sound of Silence”, and Gary Jule’s “Mad World”, but psuro, cment, and BBrown already got those. A lot of other good stuff here that others mentioned!

A few others that I don’t think anyone added yet...

Johnny Cash. Hurt.

Trent Reznor said, after hearing Cash’s version, something along the lines that he knew the song was no longer his. I think it was Johnny’s wife that said the song opened him up to a new, younger audience that never previously knew his work, and that was a tremendous source of pride and satisfaction for him.

For those too lazy to use the Googol machine...

2 from Manson would say NSFW for the 2nd one (also movie clip of a young Chris Evans) Puts a different spin on it with edge on the lyrics and harder sound

Vanilla Fudge better than the Supremes-- as they stated the lyrics are not meant to be sung fast and upbeat

Almost any cover of Zep isnt better but this is pretty darn close

Can’t believe no one has mentioned the Byrds’ gorgeous covers of Dylan classics:

My Back Pages
Mr. Tambourine Man
All I really want to do

Back in the late 1980s. Guns n Roses did a cover of "Knockin on heavens door". The Bob Dylan version of this came on the radio, and the younger girl working next to me says "who's the guy with the whiny voice doing the GNR song".

SMH

My list (2 already mentioned):
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - GNR
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Everybody Knows - Concrete Blonde (Sorry Leonard Cohen, you're a great song-writer with a cool voice but others have done several of your songs better).
Bitches Ain't Shit - Ben Folds (although more a parody, it's truly better)

EDIT: forgot one: Rocket Man - spoken-word cover by WIlliam Shatner. Ok, it's not actually BETTER. More uncomfortable in a way I'll never forget, which makes me like it.

Crossroads @ Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2013 induction. Rush, Public Enemy, Heart, Randy Newman were inducted. Lots of others in there. Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Cornell, John Fogarty, Gary Clark Jr...

Not sure if it qualifies as a cover because he wrote it but

Because The Night by Bruce Springsteen is awesome. He wrote it, gave it to Patti Smith who made a hit out of it and then he started to do the song himself in concerts.

And one for all you dads with daughters.

My favorite comment on the video: "This is how I imagined parenthood would be..... It wasn't"

And yes I know it was his band that did it originally but no other Tears or Fears are present

Musical tastes are a funny thing. I consider that the worst cover of all time. Essentially the same song with, “One time.....two times” thrown in and a far inferior singing voice.

The original has REALLY dated, awful instrumentals ... it’s like a musical version of those awful greenish/yellow appliances with really busy wallpaper. The Fugees’ version is superior, though I like Flack’s vocal.
