OT: Coyote on a bar roof in Queens? - link

Re: OT: Coyote on a bar roof in Queeens? - link

I'd say yes. Coyotes are thriving in cities.

From the linked article, "They estimate that there may be somewhere between several hundred and a couple thousand coyotes living in Chicago."

Coyotes thriving in North American cities

Re: OT: Coyote on a bar roof in Queeens? - link

I'd say yes. Coyotes are thriving in cities.

I'm inclined to say it is one too. The other two I've seen in person seemed much leaner though. Could it be a Coywolf? Meet the Coywolf.

Wildlife experts here? 75% of people here thought an eagle killed

a bear and carried it into it's nest, despite all evidence showing that it was a skunk.

And it is much more likely that the skunk was road kill. Eagles.....

eat garbage from dumpsters and road kill every chance they get. I have seen hundreds of eagles.

Thought this HAD to be the start of a joke

Coyote walks into a bar in Queens and ----

There are lots of them here in Allentown. We have many parks around, inhabited by flocks of ducks and geese which the locals insist on feeding, until the glutted birds can hardly walk, let alone fly. I sometimes see a dead yote on the road. I read that they also love to kill and eat cats.

Re: me too. I thought it had something to do with a queen being in a coyote

And I hear cougars are thriving in the burbs! I'll be here all night don't forget to tip your bar tenders and servers

Very well could be and sure looks similar to the ones I've seen out west, though those seem to be mangier and much thinner but I'm sure the heat and lack of food have much to do with that. They def. are "smart" enough and elusive enough to live in a city, not to mention that its a "belly up to the bars boys" for a type of living. They love cats, and rats and garbage and there is certainly plenty of that in the city. Frankly a city is a more likely living place for them than the wild.
When I lived in Dallas we had a whole family of them living in the culverts for over 7 years.

Coyote's love beer. I can relate to that. I also hate cats because I am allergic. Since they eat cats, go coyote's go!

Our national symbol's long history as a garbage eater

and carrion scavenger has largely been shrouded for national self-esteem reasons. Now they are everywhere and it is hard to hide.

I think the nations mythmakers need to re-purpose the national symbol--"He's a happy recycler!"

Re: OT: Coyote on a bar roof in Queeens? - link

I was stopped last year by a policeman on the Major Deegan Expressway not far from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx at about 2 pm to let a Coyote cross the Highway. I would not believe it if I did not witness this.

I'll drink to that. Feral cats are a much greater threat to wildlife such as birds and rabbits than coyotes not to mention that cats gone wild can be carriers and transmitters of rabies.

Let me know when you see some Cougars!*

If you've ever seen a coyote in the wild

The eastern coyote are very mangy and skinny and smaller than you picture them. That looks like a very well fed, groomed domesticated pet to me.

Re: If you've ever seen a coyote in the wild

I've only seen two in the wild - actually one was just off the turnpike near Lancaster - and they were both much leaner. I wonder if this is a Coywolf though. I haven't seen the PBS documentary "Meet the Coywolf," but think I'll try to watch it. Here is an article on the Coywolf.

Re: If you've ever seen a coyote in the wild

I have seen several coyotes here in NW Pa, and some of them were very healthy looking and definitely not "skinny".

No, they are not. Eastern Coyotes are larger than the ones out west by a good margin. It is not uncommon for the winning dog at a PA coyote hunt to be north of 45 #'s.

+1. Yea not sure where mOOse_44 has seen Coyotes but the ones I've seen in the Southwest look more like the Warner Bros. cartoons, mangy and on the smallish side.

The ones I've seen in Western PA are much "healthier" looking and have much better coats. I'm guessing because of the colder weather. There is also a lot more food to eat, specifically deer, since that was one of the reasons they were re-introduced to the area. They have now been spotted in Harford county MD and in Baltimore City.

Like I said in the post below they are perfect animals to live in the city. Plenty of abandoned houses for them to "den" in and plenty of rats, cats and garbage to eat.

I had two In my yard last year in Manassas area Talked to the game and wild life office in VA. And was told they are in every county in VA.

Yep, I've seen several in western Maryland (Garrett County) and they are big healthy animals. I'd imagine that if a coyote found a safe place with access to food (cats included) in a city they'd thrive.
