This has been in the news a lot over the last week or two. What do you think about cramming 4500 students in one dorm building in rooms with nearly no windows?

"Students would live in 8-person living units that "are sealed environments with no exterior windows in the shared space or in 94% of the bedrooms," McFadden wrote. "The spaces are wholly dependent on artificial light and mechanical ventilation.""

I think it's a freakin architectural nightmare.

Did the architect previously design prisons and jail?
What a stupid freaking idea.

I presume this is to keep kids from leaping to their deaths... being so depressed in their horrific living arrangement... uh oh, conundrum!

Pretty fascinating concept. The one thing that helps keep covid at bay is fresh air.. so hey, let's remove that! lmao.

Read the article. It was designed by the donor, and the architect hired to consult resigned in protest.

Here's another article that includes renderings that give you an idea of the scale and layout of one floor.

Comment regarding fresh air... "Fresh air, the architect insisted, will be vented into all rooms at twice the rate mandated by existing building codes and will be off-gassed directly to the atmosphere without any transfer to other rooms in the dorm."

Great name. Disgusting architecture. I went to UCSB in my freshman yr. and couldn't stand it. The campus itself is physically beautiful. Don't know where they would put this monstrosity.

It will be built at the very northern tip of the campus just to the east of Harder Stadium and north of the baseball field. They will be demolishing a number of one-story maintenance/receiving/transportation buildings in that area to make room for it.

So this Charlie Munger, the gazillionaire of Berkshire Hathaway fame. Seems being Uber rich affects one’s self image quite a bit. Having been incredibly successful at the stock market, he now thinks he is Frank Loyd Wright able to change architecture on a whim and how the built environment interacts with people. The fact his design contradicts decades of design dogma illustrates just how much he believes he is a change agent.
