It's difficult to listen to my phone (music, videos) when flying because the airplane engine noise is so loud. I'm sure over the ear headphones would do the best job at blocking external noise but they are bulky to carry. Does anybody have experience with memory foam earbuds from companies like Comply or Kinden? Would they help block out the noise?

bose is still the cream of the crop but are way expensive. I've got audio technica, I got them for $59 but Amazon now has them for $79.

If you are an apple user, the 8 and X have no place to plug in your headphones so you may want to switch to bluetooth. If you get an 8, you plugged buds will no longer work.

Bose QC20 noise cancelling earbuds. Expensive, but they work. I prefer over the ear so I have the QC15 but I know regular travellers that love the QC20. As a bonus they take up far less space too.

you can use an adapter with the headphones

One other option, call the local audiologist, "hearing aid" businesses. They can take an impression of your ear and create custom buds. These are really effective at blocking the sound and much better ear comfort. I have a top of the line pair similar to what "rock stars" wear on stage. These are a few hundred dollars, but I think the "economy " sets start around $100. Also have the Bose, which is great but large.

I have tried many but found the QC20 to be the best option. They are easy to carry and the noice cancelling works well.
