It would appear ND, as we knew it, is gone. I am just sick over this. I was taking my daughter to see it in June. Have to wonder if it was arson. They HAD to have several fail safes for any conventional fire.

That's terrible. Hope they can put it out before the whole cathedral burns to the ground.

Fire officials told Agence France-Press that the fire was potentially linked to the renovation of the building and is believed to have started in the attic.

Very, very sad.

if so, negligence of epic proportions. you can't leave one of the most iconic buildings in the universe susceptible to someone not grounding their band saw in properly (or whatever it was).

Wow, that's an awful photo. Just terrible.

Its so much more than a cathedral. Its an architectural wonder, houses some of the world's best artworks, an iconic piece of history. What a tragedy.
Just read that they removed ..well...

One bit of good news ... 16 statues that sit atop Notre Dame -- representing the 12 apostles and 4 evangelists -- were removed just last week as part of the restoration project.

Accident or Terrorism?

Was it still really a church, or just a national monument?

How bad is that guy gonna feel if it ended up being something as simple as that.

The nave is gone, the spires and looks like maybe one of the bell towers is gone. Hopefully they can save one tower and famous West Portal (the one with all the kings).

It's a small consolation but Notre Dame does not contain an abundance of important medieval art or glass -- the Revolution took care of a lot of that. It's not like Chartres, the other French cathedral as old as Notre Dame, which still has pretty much all its original 14th century sculpture and glass. Most of the famous sculpture on the Notre Dame exterior is 19th and 20th century reproductions. The huge spire that fell dates to the 19th century.

Notre Dame's importance is largely the structure itself, not what's inside it (and the symbol of course). And the architecture has been precisely documented. It can be rebuilt and it will be. They'll be rebuilding it for the rest of all of our lives.

Paris' historic Saint-Sulpice church briefly catches fire, nobody hurt

Things that make you raise an eyebrow

I had not seen this story. St Sulpice is an amazing place too. There are 3 Eugene Delacroix paintings on the stone in the church. Loved walking through it a few years ago. Very sad about Notre Dame. Such an incredible place. Such a loss for Paris and the world.

Given the age and design of the building I'd guess there was no easy way to douse the fire before the entire roof was destroyed. Fortunately, the French take their historical architecture very seriously. No doubt they'll have repairs done which will be as close as possible to the original although it could take some time.

Paris is full of very old and tall structures and the city doesn’t have the capability of dropping fire retardants from helicopters or planes?
