this one really gripped me. and shows how easy it is to feel uncomfortable about someone, see some warning signs, and how we still try to avoid confrontation with someone so "obviously" evil

Dirty John

quick rundown: a 59 yr old single woman in LA meets a guy online, falls in love despite some creepy behavior. his lies about his life and his past quickly unfold. but how do you extract yourself from a dangerous relationship once you're in this deep??

utterly chilling. gives great insight into the nature of manipulation by abusers, but also how easy it is to create a "new" ID on the internet.

Interesting...thanks.

My wife and I were talking about Harvey Weinstein last night. What possesses a guy to do this through the age of 65? I mean, the guy has had thousands of women, how can this still be a kick? We also talked about that wack job in Vegas. We came to the conclusion that is is rape without the rape. As some point, its about power and not sex. And, to your point, it is about "manipulation".

Same with the shooter in vegas. Here is a guy who gambled, had paid hookers by the dozens, and has anger problems. Why buy a bunch of guns and kill indiscriminately? Because the feeling of power. He was going out in a blaze, he was going to take all of those people out that made him feel bad, and then he took his own life by himself.

So you have power to manipulate, to enslave. Or, you just go out and rape someone. Behavioral science has long taught us rape is not about sex.

I am sure dozens of people will tell me I am wrong, but as an aging guy, that is the only answer I can come up with.

my g/f and I were discussing Cosby . . . I said, the worst part for me was the pointlessness of what he allegedly did. how his kick was obviously making women feel helpless, and what a sick thing for a man of his power in the entertainment business to do when he could easily get women who would have complied with his desires.

I had to deal with my ex-wife's ex husband, who I called the emotional terrorist. if he made demands and we conceded to give him what he "wanted", within 2 weeks he would make new demands. because with men like this, it is about conflict, power, and the false sense of "control" they feel by manipulating other people.
