All knowing Board—I could use your advice and suggestions. Over the last couple weeks, I’ve sort of stumbled upon an issue with my home audio set up. I have an Onkyo TX-SR605 AV Receiver I bought about 8 years ago. When I bought this receiver, the retailer assured me that it would not have an issue driving my reference series Kef 4 ohm speakers. While the receiver can drive a 7.1 channel system, my main use was listening to music so I never had anything else hooked up to it but the set of Kefs and a very inexpensive set of micro Infinitys and only recently did I add a sub.

Fast forward 8 years and I’m finally wanting to expand the system by adding some additional speakers. I took some time to read through the TX-SR605 manual and learned that, at least according to Onkyo, using 4 ohm speakers with the receiver was likely to damage the speakers, the receiver, or both. Remember, I haven’t had an issue over the last 8 years but that got my attention, I feel as though I just maybe got lucky and I shouldn’t pres my luck... plus I’m a guy, any excuse to buy new electronics, right?

Anyway, I folowed up with Onkyo to see if I could connect a power amp to the receiver to solve the problem. Onkyo told me that I could, all I needed to do is use the “front preouts” and to buy an amp with analog rca inputs— here’s the problem, there are no “front preouts” on this receiver and there is nothing in the manual that explains how to connect a power amp, either. I did some additional research on the net and confirmed that you cannot connect a power amp to the TX-SR605.

After doing a decent amount of reading, I’m thinking my best option is to buy a receiver that can drive 4 ohm speakers. So, what reasonably priced (around a grand) AV Receivers would you all recommend? Keep in mind, I will be using this to primarily listen to music- “home theater” isn’t my no. 1 priority, I’m muchmore into sound. Right now, I’m considering the NAD T758 but the one negative with that receiver is that it doesn’t have an ethernet or Y-Fi connection. I’d like to be able to use Sirius/XM internet radio, among others- I know there are work arounds but I’m looking to make this as stream-lined as possible. The main thing I need is a receiver that can drive 5 4 ohm speakers.

I’m also okay with getting a receiver with preouts and then using a 5 channel power amp so feel free to think outside the box. I’m already very interested in teh Outlaw model 5000 power amp.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.
