saw this last night with my girlfriend.
THE GOOD: Cruise is forced to play off 2 very strong female characters and it works. His gruff loner attitude is forced to deal with caring for other people on a personal level. The story is also pretty slick. not as dark and menacing as the first film (but jeez louise when Werner Herzog is your villain, how much more creepy can you get??)
THE MENH: this is NOT the first film. McQuerrie's crisp dialogue and sick sense of humor are gone from the screenplay. Ed Zwick casts a more deeply involved and personal story. The film lags at certain points because of this. Some of the characters get fleshed out a little more than they need to be. The action sequences also suffer from the editing (except for the final fight, which is pretty awesome).
THE EXCELLENT: Cruise and Colby Smulders are perfect fits for each other, their chemistry carries the film. There are some pretty funny moments that are pulled from that tension.
I gave the first film a 9/10
I give the sequel a 7.5/10
SEMI SPOILER!!!
One great moment is Lee Child's obligatory cameo. there's a bit of meta humor you might miss upon first glance.
