I used to have an older John Deere riding mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine at 24 horse power(hp). I am looking at a new John Deere the X300 with a Kawasaki engine at 18.5 hp. The dealer is telling me that this riding mower would be just as fast with the same power as the old one even though there is a difference in horse power. Can this be true or am I being told a bunch of malarkey? Thanks for your help.

Tom

X300 with the Kawasaki is 10000x the tractor than the old LA series was with B+S , believe me
Check out the JD owners forums and you'll learn about the fallacies of hp reporting

Those who shop tractors strictly on hp fall for the Sears Crap-sman trap avery time...

The Kawi is the engine you want.... kohler is good, too

Thank you for answering. I'm pretty sure I have nothing to worry about. It is nice to hear other opinions.

I am going to buy the John Deere X320. Does anyone own one, thoughts? Thanks.

Tom

without knowing what type of property you need to prowl - chances are you will love the X300-series JD/// it's a stout unit... for most applications it's more tractor than you'd ever need but that's usually a good practice... I'm jealous!

I've got an 11 year old LT180 with kawasaki motor.
Great running mower.
I have issues with how much of a bitch it is to take the mowing deck off and on, and then what an absolute pain in the ass it is to get the deck leveled. other than that, I'm happy with the Deere LT180/48inch deck.

I have a 1986 LX188 with the Kawasaki engine, it is retired from a cemetery since 2002. If you take care of it, it will be the last one you will ever have to buy...

for the record - my JD has the Briggs InTek engine and it's served me fine... I much preferred the Kawi or Kohler but my particular tractor was used / private sale and priced sooooo low I just had to pull the trigger... but not after I inquired with JD dealer service and he swore the Briggs is actually a good motor - from whatm I'm told it's built specifically by Briggs to JD specs and it is not shared with other mfrs (eg: MTD, Crapsman etc)... But it just doesn't sound as good as the Kawisaki and Kohlers... otherwise it's fine

Horsepower on a lawn tractor can be misleading. The HP is mostly used to run the mower deck. What you really should care about is the transmission. The X3xx line is pretty reliable. I have a JD 240 that was built in 1990 with a 14 HP Kawasaki that is faster than the X300 and can out tow anything the 300 could dream of.
